Thousands of American Muslims Travel to Saudi for Hajj
VOANews.com

[SIZE=2]

One of a Muslim's duties, according to the five pillars of Islam, is to make a pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca at least once during his or her lifetime. An estimated three million Muslims have traveled to Mecca to perform the Hajj. This year, 12,000 American Muslims are performing this particular pillar of Islam.

Millions of Muslims, including thousands from the US, are making the annual pilgrimage to Mecca, called the Hajj.

American Muslims start their journey by chanting their commitment to the pilgrimage.

"We say, 'here I am Allah, here I am Allah, at your service.'

I wonder how many will be trampled to death in this years annual stampede?

* On July 2, 1990, a stampede inside a pedestrian tunnel (Al-Ma'aisim tunnel) leading out from Mecca towards Mina and the Plains of Arafat led to the deaths of 1,426 pilgrims.
* On May 23, 1994, a stampede killed at least 270 pilgrims at the stoning of the Devil ritual.
* On April 9, 1998, at least 118 pilgrims were trampled to death and 180 injured in an incident on Jamarat Bridge.
* On March 5, 2001, 35 pilgrims were trampled to death in a stampede during the stoning of the Devil ritual.
* On February 11, 2003, the stoning of the Devil ritual claimed 14 pilgrims' lives.
* On February 1, 2004, 251 pilgrims were killed and another 244 injured in a stampede during the stoning ritual in Mina.
* On January 12, 2006, a stampede during the ritual ramy al-jamarāt on the last day of the Hajj in Mina killed at least 346 pilgrims and injured at least 289 more.

Allaah is above heaven and he knows every thing every where

the muslims are answering and obeying Allah to go to his house who ever is able

The first House (of worship) appointed for men was that at Bakka: Full of blessing and of guidance for all kinds of beings:

In it are Signs Manifest; (for example), the Station of Abraham; whoever enters it attains security; Pilgrimage thereto is a duty men owe to Allah,- those who can afford the journey; but if any deny faith, Allah stands not in need of any of His creatures. 3:96.97

It's extremely hard for you folks to comprehend the Islamic ideology.

Dying in that stampede is considered a honour and a form of self-sacrifice unto Allah. Muslims actually love to die there, it's for a cause that they "believe" in.

Belief, isn't that difficult for a lot of people in the world?

Pilgrimage thereto is a duty men owe to Allah,- those who can afford the journey;

This includes being able both physically and financially.

I have known people who get into debt to travel there. It's just a matter of faith.

I think it's as much or more about experiencing the Ummah, Islamic community, in all its forms. Seeing that as a Muslim you are part of something greater that includes people of all , or nearly all as Islam is rare to non-existent among American Indians or Australian aborigines, races and a variety of cultures. From the matrilineal Minangkabau to the misogynistic Saudis from the Swahili lands of East Africa to the fairest skinned Bosnians and so forth. The Hajj is said to have had a profound impact on Malcolm X's rejection of racism and black supremacy. Alas he was killed for that rejection.

That being said I hate crowds too and anyway I'm not Muslim. Still sometimes I think maybe us Christians should have maintained an emphasis on pilgrimages so we could get that similar sense of how our religion transcends any nation or ethnicity. Instead you often get what King called "the most segregated hour." (Despite mentioning Martin and Malcolm, I am white)
