My SO and I relocated from Huntsville, AL to Jackson, MS with his job exactly 1 year ago. We ended up moving into Cypress Pointe apartments in Flowood which we have enjoyed and have had no issues. However we both really want to rent a house now that our lease is up. Since we have only lived here for a year we are both still a little unfamiliar with the area. I have been looking at homes for rent, but most seem to be in the jackson city limits and I'm concerned about crime. I have heard Fondren and Belhaven have little crime, but being that they are so close to the bad areas I worry about that. Our price range is up to $1100 a month.

So are Fondren and Belhaven okay as far as crime goes and are there certain streets/areas we need to avoid? Thanks!

Yes, there is some crime. That said, a lot of very nice people have lived in Belhaven for decades with literally no problems. Right around Belhaven University campus within a few blocks is very nice.

If you enjoy living close to the action, Belhaven is definitely the place to live. It is a nice neighborhood with a wide variety of people and income levels. Mansions and apartments are right next to each other. Neighbors get out and exercise, walk their dogs, and children ride bikes and play outdoors.

When you chose to live in the city, it does come with a certain element of crime (just about anywhere in the United States), so you should weigh the benefits with the possible bad elements. For me, the benefits outweigh the bad elements. If you keep your eyes peeled, maybe get an alarm system, and get to know your neighbors you should be fine. I'm not saying freak crime moments don't happen (but then again, isolated crime incidents can happen in any neighborhood, even in Rankin County), but overall it is what I would call a pretty safe area. If you have anxiety over any possibility of crime, city living may not be for you. From my perspective, the majority of the crime that Belhaven gets is car break ins, which spikes around when the Fair comes to town in October and continues until after Christmas.

A co-worker rented an apartment in Belhaven. Within her six month lease they were broken into twice. The 2nd time she walked in on them when she ran home for lunch. They ran out the back. She was done. Broke the lease and moved to Flowood.
