I am a female Navy Recruiter and have orders to transfer to Jackson, MS from Great Lakes, IL I was born and raised in Jacksonville, FL so it was a bit tough being up here the last few years. I hear the crime is very severe and the school system is the worst in the nation? I do have school age children, one who is diabetic. Can anyone please give me some insigt on which areas have the better school system and best area to live in? I have looked online at the hosptial, but have not been able to locate any information/feedback on the children's hospital-how is the hospital's service? Thank you for in advance for any informtion given it is greatly appreciated.

Top schools feed into Madison, Germantown, Northwest Rankin, Clinton, and Brandon high schools. Anything in Madison or Rankin County is very safe.

The children's hospital is top notch. My daughter has a disorder and we have to go there constantly and have found some of the best doctors. I am so thankful that one of the few specialists in the country for her problem is in this area.

Rankin County: Flowood/Brandon/Pearl/Northwest Rankin (aka Reservoir) area is probably more friendly for new comers and a cheaper area. Pearl has sketchy areas, so stay on the east side of the airport. We live in Pearl and my child will go to Park Place Academy because I wanted her to go to a Christian school. The pearl public school is great, but the town has some crummy parts. Brandon (zip 39042) is great. Northwest Rankin/Reservoir and Flowood is a newer area, so it tends to be a little higher rent/home prices than Brandon. 39047 is called the reservoir area and the 39042 zip is Brandon even though they both are Brandon. That gets confusing. 39047 is newer and costs more. 39042 is a little cheaper and has a tad bit better schools, but a little farther from shopping.

Madison and Ridgeland has good schools. (Madison County) Ridgeland is older and the southern parts of Ridgeland have bad crime areas, so be more careful the closer you get to Hinds County/Jackson. These are the very expensive areas and the people can be uppity and snobby. That may be exactly what you want, but I did not grow up here, so it was easier to fit in in Rankin County.

I didn't mention Clinton. Clinton has pretty good schools. It's the cheapest area to live and still be safe. I like being in Rankin County because it's closer to Dogwood shopping area (in Flowood where all the restaurants and shopping is). Clinton is declining in home prices a little, but if you need more house for the money, I would definitely consider it. If you live in Clinton, you go up the Natchez Trace to Madison or Ridgeland for restaurants and shopping.
