I have to wonder whether demographics aren't involved to some extent.

Some populations know to avoid enzyme detergents and other controllable lifestyle factors which tend to make allergies more severe. Others tend toward choices which lead to development and increased severity of allergies. Yes, there's more pollen around Jackson. But I know people in the area whose neighbors use so much enzyme detergent to do their laundry, their dryer exhaust causes allergic reactions to people outside.

Too, consumption of genetically-modified foods supposedly makes people more allergic. I wonder if there is more consumption of cheaper genetically-modified foods in these cities.

And then, there's alcohol: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/20/he...ml?src=me&_r=0

Being overweight, too, has been linked to allergies - particularly, the severity of Asthma attacks. And we all know about Mississippi and its weight problem.

And just wondering... Can allergy meds be used for manufacturing meth? I just wonder if allergy clinics are not being abused in the way 'pain clinics' are being abused. If there's more of that going on in these cities, then it could skew the numbers.

Pollen Count was one factor in the ranking. But use of meds, and treatment by allergists, were also factors. I'm just wondering if demographics-driven behavioral/lifestyle differences are not partially to blame for Jackson's getting the Number One spot.

Makes me so proud to be a former Mississippian. You know, our leading the nation in so many trends made me feel, growing up, that I was at the center of the Universe. So, once again, let's all hold up our heads in pride, because WE'RE NUMBER ONE!!!!
