This is going to seem like a very dumb question, but here goes.

My fiancee and I are moving to the area around Jackson. We are currently focusing on N'West Rankin district, or the Pearl district as it seems they are the highest rated schools in the district. Strength of education is a big, big deal to us.

We notice that on some of the real estate sites, that certain school districts are "assigned". Now this will be my first real experience with all of this stuff. We've lived in small town iowa where the children go to the school that is in that town, period. However, up here, parents can take their children to any school district they want. For example, if a school district is stronger in one area the parents can take their kids to that school (of their own driving expense, etc.) no matter which district they are zoned in.

The specific reason I ask is that we are finding some nice homes that we would really like to consider, that are in the Flowood/Brandon/Ridgeland/Madison area, but it shows that many of them are assigned "Jackson school district". If we move into one of those homes, are we locked into that district and that district alone, or can you send your kids to another district if you are willing to pay a little more or drive them yourselves?

thank you for any feedback, and again.....sorry for the novice question. I'm new to all of this stuff.

As far as I know, you have to send them to the school in the district in which you live unless you send them to private school. I know some parents who would send their kids to schools in other districts just for sports if they could. Any of those districts you mentioned would be fine, just not anything the Jackson Public Schools district.

I am pretty sure that anything in the city of Ridgeland feeds into Ridgeland high school and for Madison either Madison Central or Germantown high schools. Same thing for the city of Pearl, feeding entirely into Pearl High School. Nothing in Rankin or Madison counties feeds into Jackson city schools. The Flowood/ Reservoir area feeds almost entirely into Northwest Rankin. The city of Brandon feeds into Brandon high school, as well as some some unincorporated areas up Hwy 471.

Both Rankin and Madison County school district websites should have school attendance zone maps.

There are a few neighborhoods in Pearl where the zoning boundaries don't follow the city limits. A few months ago this was in the news because some children were involuntarily rezoned and there was some backlash from the parents. A quick Google search would probably find the stories.

From my knowledge, the assigned district and school are the ones that have to be attended. Unless something has changed in the last couple of years, this is the way it has been. I remember there being a relatively high number of students that used someone else's address to avoid attending their "home school." I think that this is ridiculous to have to do, but such are the rules. Good luck.
