I wouldn't have a problem with either. Come on over! :-) If you have a point of reference, then by all means, we can start a conversation about it. Through my line of work and a lot of travel to Jackson, I probably have a higher stake in the city than you.

Oh well you didn't say you travel to Jackson for work. Well by all means your opinion is relevant.

If you want Jackson to have a viable businesses downtown or in Jackson period, you're going to have to solve the crime problem. Until that's fixed Jackson will stay as it is.

Careful, the "downtown is safe, it's the state governments fault" crowd won't like your opinion.

But this is a red herring argument, for two reasons:

1. Even successful cities have not, as you put it, "solved the crime problem." Just as an example the crime in Chicago has often been criticized (rightly so) but it has not kept that city from continuing to grow and build its downtown. And it has not kept visitors from experiencing that beautiful city. Same for NY, LA, Miami, whatever.
2. Downtown Jackson is not where the crime is. The vast majority of crime in Jackson occurs in poor residential neighborhoods where no one other than the people that live there ever go.

I was in Chicago during the 4th of July weekend. There were 80+ shootings (about 16 fatal). Despite that, the Taste of Chicago went ahead as scheduled the following weekend. Also, Harlem and Washington have gone through rebirths, despite high crime. Look at New Orleans. They have Mardi Gras, Jazzfest, the Essence Festival and occasional Super Bowls, again, despite very high crime. Please tell me why Jackson is different.

Also, downtown Jackson is the safest area of the city. In fact, downtowns of big cities tend to be safer than most other areas of their cities. Notice I didn't see they're crime-free.

You guys really need to stop using Jackson as a example when talking about large cities as if there's some sort of comparison.

There is a comparison. These were cities that were on the downswing and I'm willing to bet people outside their borders trashed them, saying they can't do this or that. Again, they have crime issues, but it didn't stop them from accomplishing what they do. Granted, Jackson doesn't have a nationally known section of town like a French Quarter or monuments like D.C. to draw people. But it doesn't mean this city shouldn't try to better itself, regardless of its many problems.
