My boyfriend and I are moving to Flowood, MS next Friday. I have never been there and he has never lived so I just wanted to get some locals advice...

1. Outdoorsy things to do? Like hiking, kayaking, four wheeler trails, fishing, etc. We love the outdoors and will drive up to an hour to be outside.

2. Best restaurants around?

3. How do yall like Flowood? What's there to do there?

4. Any locals recommend ANYTHING?

I haven't lived in the Jackson area for almost 3 years now, so I will have to let the locals comment on the other items but for item #1 - by virtue of being in Flowood, you will be minutes from the Ross Barnett Reservoir and the Natchez Trace. Tons of outdoor opportunities with those amenities there, so I don't think you will be disappointed in that regard and you won't have to drive an hour for it either.

Do some research on the Reservoir and the Natchez Trace and you can even spend some time in Google Street View checking out what the Reservoir and the Natchez Trace Parkway (it's on the north side of the Reservoir) look like and some of what they have to offer.

I am probably looking at a move there in the near future too. My suggestions:

- Reservoir and Trace, like poster said above
- Roosevelt State Park over near Morton
- LaFleur's Bluff State Park in Jackson
- Ridgeland Trails for mountain biking
- Bienville National Forest has some trails I think

I am not sure about the golf courses, if you are into that.

I hear there are a lot of little secrets as far as camping areas throughout the state. I plan on doing more RV-ing in the future and hopefully finding some of those.

If you like looking at old trash and tire dump sites in the woods, Mississippi has plenty of hiking!

Which leads me to my next great benefit of living in this area, you never have to worry about hanging on to your trash to put it into a proper can ever again.. The entire state just chunks it out the window while going down the road, or if they're a little more shy they'll wait until they park at their destination and then chunk it under the car.

All the time I get told that one of the great benefits of Mississippi is "the outdoors" -- But I find it very ironic that we treat our "outdoors" as more of just one big giant trash can. Like hunting? Have a deer carcass? Put that bad boy in a black trash bag and find the nearest back road you can. Dump it out. Good as gold baby.

Like drinking alcohol, eating fast food in excess, or smoking even though the wife is always complaining? Good news: every road in Mississippi will gladly accept your old fast food bags/drinks, beer bottles/cans/boxes, cigarettes, cigarette boxes, and Swisher Sweets wrappers.

Another great thing is that it is now considered "inhumane" to make our precious convicts pick up litter, so they no longer do that. They're too busy posting on Facebook and Snapchat from jail.

You must be a fancy Madisonnite. Rankin County is more accepting, no need to wait for a backroad, I've seen plenty of half processed deer carcasses on busy public roads and around the entrances of nice neighborhoods!

Yeah you are right. I saw a fella the other day on the main drag in Brandon just stop, put his flashers on, get out of his truck and then dump it out with cars constantly whizzing past.

Unfortunately my family was with me and I am not allowed to confront anyone with my wife around so I couldn't ask him what the HELL he was doing. Just had to look at the carcass on the side of the road for a few days until someone got brave enough to clean it up.

You should have gotten his tag number and reported him.

This is exagerated somewhat; unfortunately there's a good bit of truth in the post

Ha! My wife has a similar restriction on me. She is not fond of me yelling out of the car window at others who can't properly operate a motor vehicle, or my favorite, to yell at a cyclist who is blocking a busy roadway in spite of having a separate bike lane a few feet away.

1. there are some nice hiking trails on the trace but other than that you're out of luck.
2. There are plenty of restaurants around Flowood. Pretty much anything you want. Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese, Italian, Mexican. Anything.
3. Flowood is nice and you're far from Jackson. If you want to go to a decent mall, then you will have to drive a bit to Ridgeland
