Shocking, said no one. In many cases, JPD has written up auto burglary as "vandalism" for the past 20 years. Additionally, there are many property crimes that aren't even reported as the victims understand it is pointless.

You guys make it sound like Jackson is beneath a third world country. Is it really that bad? I haven't been there in many years (my college days, way back when), but it was a nice town then.

Some parts are good and some parts are bad. The further north and east you go, the better your luck will be.

Yes! "Third World Country" would be an improvement. Jackson, today, is more like a cross between 'The Walking Dead', and 'Life After People' - YEARS after the Zombies took over, and/or the Humans disappeared.

Last time we were there, we were heading up North State Street, and had to stop, momentarily, beside a large pothole or sinkhole, smack-dab in the middle of the street. A couple of willows growing in the water, were already as tall as the car. And there were several species of weeds, and several other species of trees sprouting up. "It's got its own little ecosystem going. Now isn't that nice? I bet we could see frogs and tadpoles and a snake or two, if we got out of the car. Let's see now: I see an Oak, a Mimosa, three fine Cottonwoods - and are those Cattails?"

And that was State Street, which is a major thoroughfare. Even on State street, you see cars with broken axles, in the center turning lane (from potholes). The NORM is for cars to weave, wildly, between potholes and bumps - drivers often having to decide which potholes are the LEAST destructive, since there isn't enough intact pavement left - not anymore... Obscure streets are becoming virtually impassable, with bridges staying out of commission for YEARS, when they fail.

There have been a number of more-brazen-than-usual crimes. There was an armed home invasion within the gated and guarded Country Club of Jackson. And a group of people were robbed at gunpoint, as they stood, in broad daylight, in the parking lot of Northminster Baptist Church - THE ritziest Baptist Church in the state - right across a major street from THE most established power neighborhood in the state (Eastover). I'm sure there are many more I've missed, living far away. But those two illustrated that even the "safest", richest areas of Jackson-proper, aren't really that safe, anymore.

Beyond the crime, the death of a beloved Jackson Academy Senior, when she hit a defective manhole cover and her car flipped, illustrated that even driving on the streets of that town isn't safe.

And have I mentioned the gas station gang-rapes?

Have you been to Memphis/Birmingham/New Orleans/Montgomery/Macon/Savannah/etc.? It's just like those places as far as the crime and condition. I usually refer to it as a cross between Memphis and Macon.

I've been to Memphis (scary in spots), through Birmingham so not so bad, and through Montgomery (also scary). I've never really been to Macon other than I-75 and I-16, and you can't see much of the town from there.

To me, Memphis roads didn't seem all that bad but there were some really pitiful looking areas.

None of those compares with what I've seen in Philadelphia (a huge city, so I guess that's normal), and particularly Chester and the NJ suburbs.

It's really a shame that Jackson has gone downhill so badly. As a kid, we'd go to the zoo there with no fear for safety at all. Jackson was a vibrant town, and it had fairly explosive growth in the 60s and 70s. I'm not sure what happened to make it basically unlivable now. I grew up in Meridian, and it was a really nice, safe town then with good public schools. I went back a few years ago for a high school reunion and it was unbelivable ... most things downtown were boarded up. And I understand it's quite dangerous too.

Birmingham is on a roll, there are a lot of good things happening there, same with NOLA - both still have many issues though. Memphis has its issues, but it has the downtown/Beale Street area and a few other right spots. I haven't heard much good about Montgomery or Macon, but I know several people who absolutely love Savannah.

Jackson is a lost cause. The reason is that nobody will elect the right leadership. Oh sure, Jackson will not go away but it will sink further and further. RIP
