Bitsi, Babette, Izzi, and I, have been getting texts and emails, since Friday, from people desperate to get out of Mississippi. One of us in Palm Beach, right now. One's been on Nantucket, since Christmas. I'm holed-up in Manhattan with the granddaughters, whose tutors are all here. At last night's conference call, we counted 43 requests from friends, former employees, former and current associates. "Get us out of here!", would be the composite request from these people.

"They buzzed the house at 6:30, Thursday morning. Usually, they don't come back over, until
8:00. But this time, they kept right on, flying over the house, all morning. And they were back at 6:30 Friday. They did that, last Sunday, too. The weather isn't stopping them. They're flying UNDER the clouds - illegally low." Friday is when the daredevil doctors get in their planes, and violate every single aviation rule or law. They don't give a flip that they're destroying lives. Typical narcies.... they love playing hero, and love hurting others, even more."

"And Heaven forbid they should use the airfield in Jackson. Jackson's too dangerous for them. So here they are, torturing the people of Madison."

"Soundproofed walls, loud fans, ear plugs, gun range earmuffs - used TOGETHER - are not enough. You know how loud those cheap little planes are. SOMETIMES, if we try the fans, PLUS the TV - on full volume - playing that ten-hour 'Pirate Ship in a Thunderstorm' thing, we can sleep - if the planes don't go directly over the house at 100 feet, which they usually do, at least once. And how long, until the white noise damages our hearing? Six thirty in the morning, until 9:30 at night, some days. Nothing but high winds or really-big thunderstorms stop them. And sometimes, those Hell Day Friday doctors-on-drugs, fly right though the thunderstorms."

Madison has been 'Mississippi's Last Chance', for a lot of people, for many years. It's the jumping-off point. It's been the ONLY place in Mississippi, offering a viable way of life for anyone with aspirations. Leaving Madison does not mean moving farther-out. It means moving as far from Mississippi as people can afford to go. We, initially, could only afford Oregon (Long Island was our first choice, but Oregon's most expensive exurb was cheaper). Bitsi, Izzi and Babette waited longer, until the miraculous Leveraging Fulcrum catapulted them into more expensive housing markets than Portland's.

Discovering Madison, delayed our own departure from Mississippi, for over a decade. We're grateful. Our own finances might not have reached Critical Mass, had there not been such good public schools, there. Putting the kids through Prep or Saint Andrew's, would have sapped our Founding Capital.

But things have changed, since we left, around '09. My friends left, because of the noise from the airplanes. Babette's place is now just a warehouse for her stuff. They left Mississippi. The noise from those airplanes, was the last straw. Same for Bitsi and Izzi and their husbands.

Babette spent a fortune, "Taking the Dinky Doctor's Wife Colonial stink off" an older estate home, there. Out with the "heartapine floorin'", and in with the marble. Out with the spinnin' wheels and milk churns, and in with the Grinling Gibbons and Robert Adam. Last time we tried to go back for a long weekend get-together, there, we left after one day. The guest rooms were "Light-soundproofed" (like you'd light-armor a limousine). The Primary Suite has become encased with what amounts to a concrete bunker - after lesser efforts failed to shut-out the din from those cheap little airplanes. We were awakened at the crack of dawn, by the planes. "Light Soundproofing" is not sufficient. The dining room had no soundproofing, and after what sounded like an hour of STRAFING by those planes, we aborted our conference, and LEFT. One feels for poor people in the Cheap Seats, who cannot afford to reconstruct their homes against the noise.

"It's like Snoopy and the Red Baron are fighting in the skies over Madison", say our older friends. They consider 'Charlie Brown' to have been pushed at them, like 'Up With People!', 'Tommy', and 'Jesus Christ Superstar' - all mass-market garbage they detested as kids. The Snoopy analogy is not a happy one. They're using it in a dark, bitter, weary way.

The people begging us to get them out of Mississippi, cannot afford Jackson Hole. They cannot afford even the tiniest habitation on Nantucket or Martha's Vineyard (1.5 million, for a one-room cottage on a tiny lot, last time I checked). What they could afford in Palm Beach, is not worthy of a dog. There is not ROOM in anyone's Aspen ranch's bunkhouse, or our Jackson Hole staff quarters, or in the maid's rooms at someone's place in Montecito, for all these people. !!!!!! And most of them need to work, anyway. I don't need any more rental agents or property managers. I sent my office jobs overseas, in '09, and have been finding work for THOSE displaced folk, ever since. I can't handle any more people.

"They're not going to do a damn thing about it. One of the pilots looks like Johnny Bravo, and is hyper-aware of his effect on closeted old men. .... there's a cartoon character Johnny Bravo, and a pornstar Johnny Bravo. He looks like both of them. All he has to do, is go over and stand by a Governor, a regulator or somebody like that, and he short-circuits them like Austin Powers wowing the Fembots. He's so sexy, they're helpless. Remember Kingfish's comment about the Jock-sniffers? Jackson Jambalaya: Let the Clawbacks Begin Well, this guy is built better than Favre, DiBiase, or even Lacoste. Nobody's going to tell him no. And so, those pilots are going to be allowed to destroy the town."

How has the FAA reacted in response to this? Minimum altitude over urban areas in 1,000 feet. Local law enforcement should corroborate these events and report them.

Also, who doesn't like Snoopy? I don't know anyone who doesn't like stories about Snoopy and the Red Baron! The entire situation is vexing but my overriding concern is Madison's criticism of the Red Baron and Snoopy. It is a story about America's most beloved beagle engaged in a dogfight against an evildoer for crying out loud.

They tried to move the Madison airport out where it needed to be, but of course, shenanigans. Now it's stuck in its current place forever, where it can't expand.

Well, if THAT is the case, then they're flying way under the minimum. I was hearing 500 feet.

We tried to have our morning Green Tea & Seltzer, in Babette's refurbished Tea House (Original to the estate, it had been a bad copy of a Georgian original in Connecticut. Our shared Decorator, though, had the weathered and rather timid carvings/keystones/finials replaced with PERFECT reproductions of the ones on the Connecticut original - some carved in Sweden - this time, in heavy relief, with the brio requisite for doing Georgian with its intended assertiveness. And you know the salvaged shipwreck cache of Chinese Export Blue-&-White porcelain that made Axel Vervoordt a famous arbiter of taste? You know, with the patina from centuries of salt water and shifting sand? Well, our Decorator, remembering Vervoordt's, had new Blue-&-White sandblasted and stained, then re-skinned the interior of the Tea House's lower floor in it, about like Gayfryd Steinberg's all-porcelain Quogue dining room, back in the '80s, when Saul was a big corporate raider, and we, on the other hand, were all still penniless young things working on our Economics doctorates? ...except Babette's is better, since 'The Oracle', who's brought-in on crucial color decisions, insisted on keeping the Tea House open-air, and adding an adjacent reflecting pool, to bounce-in MORE natural light. So, the light waves at Babette's do not pass through glass - which would change the wavelength - and so are totally correct for making the most of the blue.) It's magic - in the moments when those cheap little planes are not screaming, overhead. Otherwise, it's about as peaceful in Babette's gardens, as the bombing scene in 'Come and See', when the Nazis are blowing the Partisans' camp to smithereens.

We stepped outside, and looked up, and both planes - which seem to follow each other - were so close we could see every detail.

As for local functionaries, and why they DO NOTHING, they all appear to be putty in the hands of the hot young pilots. Nobody's going to tell them "no". That's why I linked to Kingfish's quip about the "Jock-sniffers". I mean, if Brett Favre can get millions of Dollars intended for feeding desperate Mississippi families - in order to build a volleyball facility for his daughter's school (and I admit, Brett is one seriously-hot-looking daddy, and Mississippi's politicos have obvious daddy issues...), and if Fitness Guru Paul Lacoste can get whatever he's alleged to have gotten in that same scheme (Lacoste, with his shirt off - which I've seen, in-person - truly IS awe-inspiring, though, so how is an elected official expected to think clearly, having seen such sweaty, hairy, rippling magnificence?), then it's easy to see how a real, living-breathing Johnny Bravo of a pilot, is going to get his way.

I don't live in the area but have been a pilot and owned small planes for over 20 years so I should make some comments.

First, the minimum 1000 feet is over congested areas and 500 feet is over other than congested area. Of course, a plane can fly lower during take off and landing at airport.

Some homes are built too close to the airport even right under flight paths! If the home owners don't like airplane noises, they should not have bought their homes there.

Aircraft operations are under FAA regulations. Anybody can report the violations to the FAA.

For more information, or to report a low-flying aircraft, please contact your local FSDO

My last comment is that not all pilots are rich doctors or hot young pilots. Many small aircraft flights are training flights and the students come from all walks of life.

If I am not mistaken, Madison airport is KMBO (Bruce Campbell field) and here are the airport statistics

Aircraft based on the field: 59
Single engine airplanes: 51
Multi engine airplanes: 6
Jet airplanes: 2

Aircraft operations: avg 123/day *
54% local general aviation
46% transient general aviation
<1% military

My current local airport has 503 airplanes on the field (445 single airplanes) and has an average of 403 aircraft operations a day (majority of them are training flights).

From what I have seen, Madison airport flight operations do not appear to be excessive.

BTW, I am amused by your comment about cheap little planes screaming overhead You should be glad that the majority of those "hot young pilots" are too poor to afford twin engine planes or small jets which make a lot more noises ;-)

Should the Madison airport close? Is there any large expanse of flat land in the county where it can be relocated?

They aren't. GrandviewGloria is a master of satire.
