located 2900 feet (884 meters) beneath the city. Its center is actually directly below the Coliseum. It is the only volcano located directly below a major population center or capital city in the United States. The volcano was discovered in eighteen nineteen. I know its not going to erupt but it sounds like the plot to the movie "volcano" where a volcano just popped up right out of downtown LA. I guess thats where they got the idea.

I found out about that a few years ago. I guess that explains why Belhaven is relatively hillier than surrounding areas.

That's true, I read an article on this a long time ago downtown at the library. You can find all kinds of references there. and if you would notice every shifts uphill after you pass the coliseum.

I was told during my stay in Jackson that when you go down the hill on High Street and the curve on I-55 that you are dropping down into the bowl of the volcano.

I've been told that Greenville is also atop a dormant volcano.

I remember my Biology teacher first told me about this volcano when I was a sophomore at Grenada High School in 2004. I couldn't believe it at first!

I think the old volcano isn't active anymore. Like the teacher said, if it's active and when it erupts, we will have to pick a new capital city for Mississippi because a gigantic hole with pile of destruction and flooding water from Ross Barnett Reservoir will be the remains of Jackson. Now that's pretty scary picture.
