Dear All,

I am moving to Jackson Mississippi this summer to the Univ. of Miss. Medical School for a research position. I would really appreciate any info and suggestions on the best places to stay in Jackson. Also the payscale for a research fellow isnt so good and so what would be the living expenses like in the place as well. Im looking for a safe, clean and convenient neighborhood, with safety being the first priority at a walking distance from the medical school or at the most within 3 - 5 mi. I can out in a maximum of $700- 800$ as rent and am open to sharing with anyone as well. Anyone from Jackson or those who have been to Jackson please do try and provide me with some info on some of the stuff.

Cheers

Gopal

Fondren Hill apartments are within easy walking distance of UMC. They are older but convenient and in a nice location.

The Belhaven neighborhood - This is a residential neighborhood surrounding Belhaven University, bordered by North State St, Fortification St, Riverside Dr and I-55. This neighborhood is full of apartments an easy bikeride to UMC under 5 minutes. Be careful not to pick apartments south of Fortification which is not as safe, unless you go downtown etc.

These areas around UMC (Fondren and Belhaven) are nice and affluent but there is "some" crime. If you prefer a crime free area that's a quick jaunt to UMC, then you want Flowood.

The City of Flowood in Rankin County - This is straight shot from UMC out Lakeland Dr, also known as Highway 25, about 10 minutes away. There are apartments all along Lakeland Dr and this area is virtually crime free and very new. One apartment complex that's been around for years is called Reflection Pointe. The are numerous others including newer ones. You should have no problem with your price range.

Lastly, an area more like 15 minutes away from UMC is the city of Ridgeland, which has many apartments, with the nicest being on or north of Lake Harbour Drive. This area also is clean and has very low crime.

Fondren is home to many UMC workers, and you can rent a nice house or apartment with or without roommates. The trend seems to be that those who are doing long term residencies usually buy a house and then rent the spare bedrooms out. This can be very cost affective and allows for greater amenities than you can find in an apartment complex. Belhaven would be the second best choice with good proximity and it's another great community. After that, I would recommend looking in NE Jackson, around Ridgewood Rd and MeadowBrook Rd. From someone who lives in Fondren and have friends (and families) in both Belhaven and Fondren, I can attest that the crime in these areas is minimal.

Gopal,

Flowood is just 5 minutes, maybe 10 minutes in traffic from UMC. You can't go wrong in that area. Fondren Hill apartments are literally across the street from UMC and in a nice location tucked away near a variety of shopping and restaurants. They are older apartments, having been there for 30 or 40 years. You should contact UMC and ask them how their students and workers find apartments and roommates. I would assume they get these questions all the time.

Check out the Belhaven area close to Belhaven University, UMC, and Milsaps College. Also there are apts on Lakeland Drive by UMC and St. Dominic. Somewhere else within "bicycle distance" is the Vieux Carte Apts on Frontage Rd./I-55.
