I will be attending an event hosted by Bellhaven University in Jackson. I will either be staying at a hotel near High St which is south of the school, or near a medical center which is to the north. I know it will be a 1-1.5 mile walk. It would be during daylight hours. I am not concerned about the distance, as I walk that distance all the time, but is this a fairly safe area?

Yes, Belhaven is a safe area. It is one of the historic neighborhoods of Jackson, where you will find bungalows, craftsman style homes, tudor style homes, etc - a very charming area. If you're wanting to walk, I would recommend staying at the Fairview Inn. If not there, then the Cabot Lodge is close to Belhaven's campus as well. If it were me, I would stay at the Hilton Garden Inn Downtown, aka King Edward Hotel - it is a newly renovated historic hotel that is quite affordable actually. It has a great bar, coffee shop, and restaurant on the first floor, as well as indoor pool and roof deck/pool. It is located about 2-3 miles from Belhaven.

You would need to watch yourself after dark, but during the day the city should be fine in that area.
