Default Commuting from the Beaches?

Greetings all from a brand new member!

I'm getting ready to come down to Jax from Virginia as a finalist for a job downtown. Thing is, we lived in Jax from '87 to '90 when I was stationed at Mayport (actually lived in Ponte Vedra Beach), and we kept the house when we moved, so we basically know the area, although it's really grown in the last 17 years. If I get this job, we will be moving back to PVB. My main question is how is the commute from the Beaches to downtown? I've heard there's a lot of construction on I-95, and it looks like there are a few new interchanges on JTB. When we lived there, I never had to make the commute downtown, so this will be new to me. If I have to be at work at, say, 0800, when would I have to leave home?

Thanks for any help!

I don't do it often but at peak times there is traffic especially through the construction areas, sorry but that's the best I can offer

We live in Jacksonville Beach, close to JTB, so I can only comment on the commute from this area. The commute ranges from 20 minutes to around 1 hour depending on traffic. I don't now if there is less traffic in the summer because school is out, but right now if you leave at 7:30 you will be at work by 8:00. You will miss the clogging of JTB which is bad around 7:50.

Thanks! That's a big help! Our house is in Ponte Vedra Landing (just a little south of JTB), so it's probably about the same distance that you have). That definitely sounds doable...up here, I've had to endure the D.C. area traffic on occasion, so 20 min. to an hour doesn't sound bad at all. Up around D.C., it can sometimes take several hours to go 10 miles.

Thanks again!

while traffic in JAX can be bad it can't be compared to other big cities like NY, DC or ATL.

My dad was stationed at the Pentagon for 4 years so I know all about the traffic in DC. He left the house at 5:30 in the morning and carpooled with three other guys (we lived in Northern Va). This definitely doesn't compare!
