i visited jax and surrounding areas
(sidenote: i am tired, so if this seems choppy or sloppy, my apologies):
went up to jax and surrounding areas this weekend, visiting friends. we drove south to ponte vedra and st aug. liked both areas as i knew i did/would. ponte vedra bch along a1a is very nice. drove along 312 in st aug and really didnt see a lot of signs for new subdivisions, maybe they are more inland though. lots of tourists walking around in st aug. the tourism effect may get a little old if i moved there. however, maybe more inland would be better...
jax bch is nice in most areas, but kinda spotty. same with atlantic bch and another beach right next to it. parts seemed old and a little messy. but, ppl seemed more friendly and ppl also seemed to drive better. like i said though, this is just based on my weekend trip. i liked the 9a/baymeadows areas. very green and new shopping centers, etc... saw a few running of the red lights and such, but less than i see in orlando. saw lots of nc,sc,tn, and ga plates. ny and nj a close 2nd.
not that it matters, but i heard a lot less spanish speaking while there too, and also more confederate flags and nascar bumperstickers! hahaha. neither a good thing or a bad thing.
compared to orlando, my impression based on my short trip, (although i have visited before): a tad more friendly, better driving habits, just as hot as orlando (atleast on the days we were there), less hispanics and more nascar bumperstickers. this is all i could come up with on my short trip, and overall, i really liked the ponte vedra areas. have to spend more time there to see if it would be worth relocating, but overall, it seemed more to my liking than orlando. my beef with orlando is the ppl and the driving habits, and lack of community, and i am not sure if the areas i visited were THAT much better than orlando, but it was better. i'd have to spend more time there to really find out.

Clay County and St.John's are which are West and South Of Jacksonville are both very nice areas with good schools and shopping .... St.Johns especially has many new upscale areas . You are going to hear some Spanish just about everywhere that is worth living in our country even the Carolinas and Georgia .... just deal with it or learn some Spanish

my heart sinks while reading this. I am moving to Jax Beach August 1st and am not very interested in confederate flags. Is it possible to stay away from this? I will be living in north Jax Beach, a block from the ocean.

Smash,
No worries.
Yes, plenty of Nascar stickers ("#3" and all that ), but confederate flags? No. Sorry. Not very visible in this part of town. I have seen exactly 2 in the last 4 months or so (I remember because they are a pretty rare sighting around the Southside/Beaches).
Now there are other parts of the city where it is more common to see confederate flags on vehicles. On the weekends people come from all over to hang out at the beaches, so you'll have a real mix of people and may see a flag here and there, but it's nothing to be concerned about.
Spanish? Yup. Plenty of nationalities represented in Jax...it's one of the great things about the city .

As a minority that was born and raised in Jax, I wouldn't worry too much about confederate flags. Although, you will find a significantly higher percentage along with less tolerant people in the Ocean Way area. Avoid this area and areas just adjacent to it and you'll be a lot happier.

Ponte Vedra Beach along the Boulevard is even nicer.
When we first came through PVB, on a daytrip from Hilton Head Island to St Augustine, we also fell in love with it and hadn't even discovered the Blvd or the charming "Old PVB" area. We've seen almost all of the Eastern Coast from Maine to Alabama (we're a Danish/German couple travelling to the U.S. since 1993) and I can honestly say that there are not many places like PVB. We spent all of our vacations there since 2001 (in the Sawgrass Country Club) and even bought a home east of A1A two years ago for retirement. It's a great place to live. If you can afford it.

I have read a lot about oak leaf plantation. We are looking to relocate from NY with three children. Is anyone familiar with this community? It seems really nice from info on the internet.
thanks
