Hi all, new to this forum and I like all the information given here. I will be in a new job in Downtown JAX, and have never been there. I like to have information on transportation, housing, schools, crime, shopping malls, etc. We are a family of 2 adults to children (4-11). I will like to buy a house in the upper 100k budget, close to downtown (30-40mins drive), in a place with good schools. Also will like to know about things to do. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Anywhere in St Johns County will get you great schools but watch out for new sub divisions and high cdd and hoa fees to add to our property taxes
I love St Augustine where I am 10 mins from great beaches, 35 mins to Jax and 5 mins from a 445 year old city.It has everything we want and great schools and a community feel.

Hello Peter... What area in St Augustine do you live? We had the chance to visit this past weekend and loved it; we are now looking to buy a house somewhere between Jax and ST Augustine

I live in Royal St Augustine and also own a house on Anastasia Island . Feel free to contact me and I will answer any questions you have. I have to say it might be better to rent first until you are sure where you want to settle

Thank you for your reply. I am thinking about renting for the first few month until we are settled. The place I like must be about 30 mins from downtown (taking into consideration traffic) and with good schools. some people have talk to me about Mandarin, Ponte Vedra.

Another great website to look at regarding schools is Florida School Choice It will tell you all about the public and private schools. The Magnet and Charter programs, any scholarship's available, etc... With traffic and the size of Jacksonville St. Johns County would be longer than 30 minuets from Downtown Jacksonville. You may decide it is worth the drive with all the freeways, but it is more like an hour drive with traffic... Mandarin is closer to a 30 min drive from downtown Jacksonville, but with the magnet program you can live anywhere and pick your school based on your child's needs...

School Accountability Report .. this link will take you straight to the grades for the schools... you can pick elementary and Middle school with an A or B grade in Duval, Clay, or St. Johns County and a list of only the A and B schools will populate...

If your neighborhood must be 30 mins from downtown (with traffic - I'm assuming you mean rush hour traffic) then you want to go the opposite direction of traffic or live close to downtown. Riverside32205/Ortega32210 or Arlington32211/Ft. Caroline32277 would be close enough with traffic to meet your 30 min time... away from traffic would open up Northside... You could go out to pumpkin creek area... The Cape is a great neighborhood... Houses off of Yellow Bluff Road 32226... it is farther mileage wise but less traffic... This area is really starting to grow with a bunch of new communities, new shopping center, etc... 32226 is comparable to a country setting with new growth, 32205 and 32210 is historic city like, 32211 is more like old yet sorta modern city, and 32277 has a lot of country club rural like areas and 32211 and 32277 is towards the beach... although 32226 has some beach areas as well... Riverside/Ortega is river not beach and very artistic type a lot of galleries, museums, people tend to walk or take the bus a lot in this part of the city... each area of Jacksonville has it's own unique atmosphere... Mandarin is a similar to 32277 suburban - rural kind of atmosphere... Both of these areas built up (or grew) about the same time frame...
