A question about local government in St. John's County. It appears that other than St. Augustine and Hastings, all of the county is governed by the county board of commissioners. No mayors, no municipal councils or school boards, no municipal police departments, no local planning and zoning boards. Is that correct?
I'm wondering how well that works. Here in NJ, we have more than 500 towns and about 20 counties. So that's 500-plus school boards, police depts, town councils etc. It breeds tremendous overlap and helps lead to the government corruption that NJ is so infamous for. However, it's not difficult to get the ear of local officials when you have problem. They might live on your street or in your development. (I have a school board member living next door.) So, how responsive is local government? And how good is the police coverage, which I presume is handled by the county sheriff's dept.?
