Default Jacksonville Hip Hop

Hello folks. I am Junkie.

I won't say too much because I don't want this to be considered as advertising...

So, I 'll just speak about some of it.

Does anyone here like hip hop? Not even Just Hip Hop. Punk, emo, blues, ska, r&b, and poetry. Well what I want to do id be albe to link folks to some of the stuff that goes on in Jacksonville. I mean, Yellowcard and Red Jumpsuit App are from here. I was at the shows they played before Mtv2. And there are more of them and others here.

We just came off of the Warp Tour. We were like the only hip hop acts there. But it was truly an experience. Let's just say that the rockers' grocery list is booze and smokes. (ask me how I know) We were chilling with Mayday Parade and the Street Drum Corps. OneBeLo was there too. I shook hands with the drummer from Hawthorne Heights.

Anyways, lets talk about what the local shows could do to earn the support of the local people. We should learn alot from this thead(yea i know)

Ya'll take it easy. I'll be back.

I like 80's music, country, motown, dance , sorry not rap or hip hop

fav is stone roses, bon jovi , new order, REM , gretchen wilson, trace atkins, happy mondays, montgomery , etc

sounds to me more like angry men shouting and I don't understanding many words anyway

Well, that is because most of it is angry dudes shouting words. Can't lie about that.

I'd still would want ya to check out some of the other forms of it. For instance, There is a guy by the name of Cool Calm Pete. Trust me he is far from the angry yelling guys. He puts together great songs and his story telling ability is high level. If ya dig country, he would be a better hip hop act for ya.

Check him out. Ya mite like him. I'll send ya a link through PM.

PS. I never liked country. Up until I saw some footage of the Ole School Chet Atkins playing his guitar. I am believer now. That guy gave me the chance to actually say that I listen to all types of music. And Dolly Parton is a genius. Nuff said. LOL

another 80's leftover here I even date back to *gasp* disco.
I have some of the earlier rap from the late 80's early 90's
as most know I was a DJ for 20 years so had a wide range of songs in my collection.
Todays rap is to "hard" for me it has a heaviness that doesn't appeal to me.
lol I did take my nephew to a R Kelly LL cool J concert years ago when he mom wouldn't take him.

I think if there was less focus on the as matthew said anger it might not be so bad

Well we normally throw shows here in opposition of what the radio plays. Honestly, I would love to hear a Rakim record on the radio. I'd love to hear a LUKE song on the radio.

And if ya looking for that type of funk, we have a few groups that vary within the feeling.

The ABs(formally "ASAMOV") is a 4 man group. Blend of KRS-1, Rakim, and the Jungle Brothers.

The Smile Rays
A Producer, a Jazz/soul inspired singer, and a power emcee. Their sound is what Digable Planet would be Present day with a sprinkle of P-Funk.

Simple Complexity
2 man team. They are like the Blend of Tribe, Slum Village, and Outkast.

We have the talent here. It is just kinda hard to put it all out. Alot of folks are so bent on making themselves money that they don't care about the quality of the music. They don't even care about the fans. So we try to make music that the die hard fans would like to hard.

De La fans still exist. KMD and 3rd BASS fans are still around. They all Love MFDOOM.

Sorry, I am rambling, but I'll pm ya the links so ya can check them out.

TJ - (sounds so much nicer than tough junkie) Please keep that feeling that money isn't everything. I have seen to many people sell themselves out for a few bucks. I hold great respect for artists that keep their beliefs.

No worries. I'd rather work at Wendy's with 70 fans of me music, than to tap dance with shiny fronts, a tank top(yea I said tank top), and a chain just so folks can see me as established.

Making a track and making a song are very different. (ramble ramble)...

I will make sure that I get ya this cd that I have put together. It will be a free sampler of Jax Hip Hop scene. All of the talent so that the clowns can be weeded out from the actually music.

I wish I could of met ya like 3 weeks earlier. Summer in the City is an annual thing that we started last year. It is all about Hip Hop as a culture. From 12NOon til 10pm Family friendly(just stay away from the spray can mists) All forms were there. Just based on campaigning for some hip hop, approx. 850 people in attendance. Big day for hip hop. (and the cops helped)

Wish ya could have made that. Ya would have been proud.

........and Johnny Cash - ya' gotta love Johnny Cash, Junkie .

I remember my dad playing his albums when I was a kid and I rediscovered him again about 10 years ago. The Nine Inch Nails remake of "Hurt" that he did brings me to a place each time I hear it. Even the video, with June standing there looking at him, and knowing she died shortly after that video was made.....

Johnny Cash was putting out phenomenal music all the way until the end...what a loss.

I'm not a big country fan, but I like some of it. That album Loretta Lynn did with Jack White (from The White Stripes), "Van Lear Rose" was a pretty awesome country album.

I'm pretty schizophrenic in my music choices, not too obscure, but a little out there. I love all the classics (I consider the Rolling Stones a classic...they are for me ). I also love Lou Reed, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Propellerheads, U2, The Waterboys, and some new stuff like Keane, Modest Mouse, KT Tunstall (talented girl!).......so you see, I'm all over the place .

It's funny you mention Digable Planet - I only have their first album and I used to listen to it a lot, I need to dig it out . I really loved that butterfly song.......

I wish you success with your music Junkie .

And yes...

Johnny Cash is brilliant.

To jump away, I love CAKE, and Daft Punk. Fat boy Slim sometimes. They a not as consistent. Oh...

Basically what I want me music to be is bending music itself. There are a few acts out in the world that define what music should feel like.

Portishead is one of them. I cannot describe what they are except by saying the word music. It's like... naw, I won't even try. Outkast does it sometimes too. Now the Gorillaz are spazzy like that. And Gnarles Barkley. Music is good.

I hope folks can see mine like that. Just music. No labels, no categories, no types of,... Just music, like the Rescue Rangers' Theme Song...

LOL!
