Let's see ... most major music groups/individuals have concerts here ... many smaller venues for concerts of all types ... a huge river and many smaller rivers ... a symphony ... an NFL team ... minor league Arena football, basketball, baseball, soccer ... 2 Univ with most sports ... public swimming pools ... many major chain restaurants and dozens & dozens of excellent local restaurants ... many Broadway shows ... the Alhambra and lots of smaller neighborhood theaters ... urban and natural parks all over the city ... hiking & biking trails ... miles of beaches ... campgrounds ... golf courses ... lots of bars/nightclubs for all genres ... quirky little shops ... new modern shopping areas ... kayak/canoe/paddleboat rentals ... fresh or saltwater fishing ... recreational sports teams for kids & adults ... the Art Walk ... the River Run ... the Air Show ... July 4th fireworks ... the Circus ... the Riverside Arts Market ... outstanding museums ... a world class zoo ... it recent years: the Super Bowl, NCAA Basketball Tournament, Ice Capades, Nat'l Gymnastics competition, ACC Baseball tournament ... yeah, there's nothing to do here
Is that all??? Sheesh! No wonder I'm so bored here...
I don't consider the lower half of FL "the South". It's nothing like "the South". I actually like a lot of things about "the South" and for some reason it ends probably around Martin county.
My husband and I were hit by a dump truck who ran through a red light so I always make sure everyone is stopped at the red before going at the green. I never assume that they'll stop and I'm usually right. It's a very prevalent issue in Miami. It's almost like the cars are attached so the person who went when it was yellow is attached to 10 cars behind him who then go through the red.

Thank you, I finally got suggestions on page 11. Although they are spread out throughout the county/city, and I will have to spend gas digging through the land mass to find them, and already visited the museums, and not a sports fan, nor do I have kids, and I'm not impressed with shopping, nor the Air Show, nor do I like football and 4th of July fireworks happen once a year, all those are great suggestions, so that if someone reads this post, they know what to look for in the area, based on their likes/dislikes.
I do agree there are lots of outdoor activity opportunities here which is quite nice. The symphony orchestra is pretty great as well as the Riverside Arts Market. The funky shops in the Riverside area also greatly appreciated.
Honestly, why does it bother you to hear a certain type of music in a store or something is sponsored by a church? Again, I'm in NO WAY religious and I just don't even notice these things.
As far as comparing how churches are part of the community down here and they aren't up there. Same thing goes for the Northeast. Churches are a part of the community throughout the South (I lived in NC for 7 years, same way there). While I'm not religious, I think this is a good thing. At least there is a sense of community here. There is none up North.
I have no problem if someone is religious (or not). I have no problem if they are Muslim, Christian, Jewish, etc. either. I don't care. Why do you care so much?
I don't care if people are religious or not, but seeing religion seeping through the local culture when you have never seen or experienced that before, is quite a culture shock.
Right, however, unless you grew up under a rock--or are not from the US (which, if that's the case, then I could understand not knowing these things), you'd know it gets HOT. When people tell you it gets HOT somewhere, you should expect this. Maybe you're not prepared for it but you came off as being surprised in your original post. Everyone told me, and I'd heard for years, when it's hot in the southwestit's not as bad because the humidity is so low. People still say that. Well, years ago when I visited Texas it was hotter than the hinges of Hell, the humidity was low, and I was surprised Now, to a certain degree, I would agree that you'd expect someone to not be shocked about it being hot in FL. But the OP moved there for work and wasn't one of the bazillion who moved there BECAUSE of the weather, act surprised, and then complain...
Ok, so what beaches in the US have palm trees for shade? Either way, the vast majority of the beaches in the world, do not have shade on the beach. Until the late 1960s and early 70s south Clearwater Beach had gorgeous Australian pines with wonderful shade, just a few yards off the beach. You could park in the sand under the trees, spread a blanket in the shade, ON THE BEACH and swim. Last time I visited, there was a Sheraton where the trees had been... Not sure there are even any beaches left like that in FL...thanks to "progress." There were some areas on Courtney Campbell Causeway like that also, but those weren't "real beaches."
Again, unless you grew up under a rock, how could you not know people are more religious down here!!?? It's one thing to KNOW people are religious, it's quite another to learn/experience a particular area's entire social network revolves around church/religion. Again, EXPERIENCE is something you cannot really learn until you live it.
Nobody is questioning whether you do like the faster pace or not. But, again, how could you not know this? I've lived in the south my entire life. I've always heard the pace is faster in the north and on one level I KNOW it. I cannot fully understand the positive/negative impact it will have on me until I EXPERIENCE it. And if for some reason my perception of the reality isn't my personal reality - I'm going to be shocked
The thing is, you come here and totally trash somewhere. I'm with you in some of your complaints. I don't care if people trash areas like that. I'm ok with living here--as are over 1,000,000 other people. However, some people don't like it here. That's also fine. But you talk about a bunch of things, which you should have known before you moved here. The OP is entitled to an opinion, he was simply advising others of things to consider that he didn't know to consider. Nothing wrong with that.
Yes, some of these things you may not have known about until you experienced it, but the vast majority of the things you complained about are, well, honestly, kinda common sense. More importantly, you should be mad at yourself more than anything. You said you interviewed for a job and had to take it on the same day. Now, I understand we don't all have a lot of choices for employment...especially during these trying times. However, if you had to make a major move, then you should have told the employer you need to investigate the area before committing to moving here. That's on you not the area. The OP said he'd been there about a year, so... Let's see, since 2008 it's been the worst economy in 70+ years, jobs at a premium, and you're suggestiong someone say "let me think it over and investigate the area" while there are probably 100+ willing to work there sight unseen...get real
I'm sorry you're not happy. I hope you find somewhere that you'll be happy. Maybe this time you'll do a little investigation before moving...
Perhaps you, and others here, will recognize that the OP wrote an intelligent post and gave good justification for why he's not happy and not take his comments so personally. Not everyone has to love Jacksonville, or Florida.

And I'll add that I CARE what kind of music is played in stores. I don't want to hear Christian/gospel, I don't want to hear rap, and I don't want to hear loud, hard rock. I want low key, bland, generic, middle of the road, classical, OR old rock & roll, or even some of the new country (I am in TN). Then I'll spend more time and money in the store
