A friend and I are looking to move by next summer. We want the beaches, nice economy and a lot of great things to do in the inner city and surrounding areas. So, Jax is one of the many choices. I want to work offshore as a cook and save up my money over the next 5 years or so while he attends school and pursue his goals. Though he's only a teen and I'm almost 25, he looks up to me like a big sister I guess you could say. Anyway, though I've lived in Alabama most of my life with the occasional city hopping only to return home, I just want to permantly move away-go on with my life. I'm also single with no kids which helps make things a lot easier in this day and time.

The stress depends on where you work. My job and company is about as stressful as you can get. Everybody is majorly stressed and barely talks. Maybe a company started and headquartered here might be different. I would sure like to try it.

I guess a lot depends on where you came from and where you have been. I don't believe one should have to drive 2 hours to find a decent store unless they live on a midwest farm maybe. As far as beaches go you need to check out South Florida. The best beaches in the state by far. Ft. Lauderdale would be the place to start. Much nicer and a million more things to do. You would probably never sleep. Then you could always check out South Beach, Palm Beach, Hollywood, Miami Beach, etc. No comparison. These beaches helped put Florida on the map years ago.

I am glad you are happy here and that's all that counts. When you are ready to move on and explore just know there is much more to experience and see in Florida.
I honestly think you are just in a bad situation at work & its frustrating. That can play a BIG role on overall happiness with your surroundings.

I also think you havent given Jax a fair shake. Sure, some of those things you mentioned are indeed true. But, im new here as well & have lived all over the country. Everywhere from right down inside the big city in the northeast taking the subway everywhere I go, to living in a little beach house on the Gulf of Mexico. And I honestly think Jax has a lot going for it. Certainly more than a lot of other cities & its getting better & better.

I think all things considered, the beaches here are quite nice. South Florida has the most beautiful beaches in the continental US, so thats an unfair comparison. Jax beaches aren't as nice, but they are still pretty good & better than what most the coastal country has.

I think you should give it another shot & just start taking advantage of some of the stuff thats here instead of wishing it had this or that. Its not a first rate city, but there are problems with living in one of those too. Trust me. Aint nowhere a bed of roses, but if you consider what Jax has opposed to the rest of the country, its pretty good.

BTW. Man if you wanna talk about a super conservative, right-wing & uneducated place with god awful beaches & no shopping, try living anywhere in south Texas. And there, its not the confederate flag, but they wave the Texas state flag EVERYWHERE.

I lived over in Ft Lauderdale area for 10 years and went to the beaches many times, a few times a month. I just recently went to Jax as my DD lives there and we went to the beach and I though it was quite nice. I loved it up there but I was only there a week. I think that life is what you make it, and if you are unhappy there you may be unhappy somewhere else.

Stressful jobs are no fun. I worked in one for about a year and quit without another lined up and learned never to do that again.

I just joined this board having moved to the Jax area recently. We live at Eagle Harbor in Orange Park and love it. My husband sold his company up north so we are both taking a break from work. Since we don't need to travel to work we have had no trouble with the traffic that some folks here complain of. Plus we came from the Boston area where traffic is horrible! Now that we are settled I am looking forward to exploring and getting to know the different Jax areas. We have been to Ponte Vedra, Avondale, and to the Cummer Art Museum. What other places should we explore?
