The Daily Beats in association with Newsweek magazine has ranked 2 Duval County Public high schools in the top 10 in the whole USA
#3 Stanton College Prep
#8 Paxon School for Advanced Studies
here's the link... America's Best High Schools: The List - The Daily Beast

This just begs the question why can't more Jacksonville public high schools do as well. Is it money spent on the schools? Is it just the students? Is it the teachers? Is it the parents involvement? Whatever it is it needs to be done or forced to be done at some more area schools, and the school board needs to be held accountable if its not.

I am not sure how it works (meaning being a magnet school), several parents I know from Fernandina Beach send their children. I am curious also. Is it open to students outside Duval also?

More than likely these are like magnet schools and students have to apply and have a certain GPA and test scores to enter them. When I looked at the list, I could tell most were for the "best of the best" as far as brainpower goes as look at the name of the school! And this means the students who go there are MOTIVATED to learn and not the ones who could care less, are truant, hostile, mediocre or less in the brain dept., high in poverty, and all the rest that average high schools have to deal with. In all honesty, I HATE seeing these lists, for they are like UNREAL schools, and regular high schools for the most part, cannot compete with them.

These schools are NOT like this one, which is the average; please read:

Well, once upon a time there was a debate about whether there was a brain drain and whether these magnets, Stanton and Paxon in particular, were bad for the school district...the crux of the debate being that most of the top students were funneled into these schools to the detriment of the rest.

Back in the late 90s early 00s you had to have a Duval address. I knew some families who moved just to send their kids to Stanton and some that used addresses of relatives who were in the district.

Is it money spent on the schools? No.
Is it the students? Yes. They want to learn.
Is it the teachers? Yes. They have no discipline problems, and the students want to learn.
Is it the parents involvement? Yes. They help their children to succeed, have prepared them to work hard, and strive for excellence.

You have to have these three ingredients to be a successful school.

I didnt look at the list, but I assume the school or either Stanton, Paxor or Anderson. All special schools for special students. Why cant more Jax schools do it? Most Jax schools dont care.

I'm honestly not even sure it's fair to include magnet schools in the survey. Those school are going to have the higher achievers and certainly don't reflect the average Jacksonville High School.

I am thrilled that Jacksonville has those schools available. And I am glad that they have been nationally recognized. I just think there should be a separate ranking for magnet type schools.

We had the same type of situation in Fairfax County, VA. Overall, the schools are all pretty good. But using a public magnet like Thomas Jefferson High School, which is insanely difficult to get into and only accepts the brightest, most competitive students is a little misleading. Of course it's a great school. The student body is made up of highly academically kids.

I think that's why it's so important to look past the numbers.

Can you attend these schools if they are in your district, or do they have special entry requirements?

I believe you have to apply, then it's by lottery.

Do you know what criteria was used to rank these schools? I believe if you knew that, you would be able to answer the above questions.
