Jacksonville is the current AA affiliate of the Marlins while New Orleans is the AAA affiliate.

New Orleans population:
City: 343,829
Metro: 1,235,650

Jacksonville:
City: 821,784
Metro: 1,525,228

Before you say "Well thats due to Katrina". It doesnt matter, minor league clubs change teams every year for almost no reason at all.

Theres one reason and one reason only we dont move up, and thats MONEY. At the AAA level you'll play teams across the country, so you have to pay for the players to fly. The Bragans want to make as much money as possible and paying for airplane tickets would take money out of their pockets. Its sad, but absolutely true. They are already millionaires and their greed is holding back Jacksonville.
The organization is growing a bit

Suns and 94.1 WSOS-FM Announce New Radio Broadcast Partnership | Jacksonville Suns News

They are now longer on AM and are now FM, I guess the next step would be local TV broadcast. Its nice to have traditional alternative to Jaguars Football.

I lived in Jacksonville when the city last had AAA baseball. There is no comparison in the talent level. AA baseball can be entertaining, but it isn't nearly the same game. I saw Tom Seaver and Nolan Ryan pitch for the Suns. The Suns were the New York Mets' AAA farm club just before they won their first World Series in 1969, and a big chunk of those guys played in JAX. You aren't going to get many guys like that at AA - and when you do, they aren't there for long.

BTW - it is the Mets you have to thank for JAX losing AAA baseball. They moved their AAA club to Virginia after the 1968 season, and the Suns faded from existence before being resurrected in the Southern League in 1970, where they have remained ever since.

I also prefer sports in downtown settings vs suburban areas like where the Dolphins play.
