Anyone work/know a nurse that could give me some tips on wage/union/job climate in the RN field?
My husband and I are both RNs and we lived in Florida for quite a while. We are relocating back to Jacksonville from Phx in January 2009 so we have similar issues to face. However, I visit Florida at least once a year to visit family and I was there in 8/2008. We currently live in Phoenix, AZ as a reference. From my perspective, Jax has "no rush hour" and "no traffic". I don't know what HI is like, but I thought the streets/roads/highways were empty compared to Phoenix. I know folks in Jax who think it is horrible, but it is a matter of perspective. When I return to Phx from Jax the Phx traffic nightmare seems incredibly worse than Jax.

Florida is a 'Right To Work' State. There are no unions and the wages are commiserate with that issue and the clinical area you work in. I've heard RNs in HI are VERY well paid compared to Phx or Jax. Florida RN wages are among the lowest in the country (as is Az). But, there is a huge demand. My husband and I are both "Generalists" (Expert at nothing, but comfortable enough anywhere to give good care.) He has 20+ years of experience and I have just a few. We both have been offered numerous positions at $30 hr with benefits and $36 hr without. We have found some
positions at more and other positions at less.

Fortunately, I am transferring with the same employer and my wage will not change one way or the other so job-hunting isn't an issue for me. My husband is semi-retired due to an injury and will work part-time. Our kids are all grown and we have almost no material needs. So, $$$ are not a huge factor (Never where, honestly.) BTW, maybe my hubby and I have never gotten too far away from our "Redneck Roots", but Orange Park has many areas that are perfectly acceptable to us. : - ] We've both lived in far worse places than Orange Park. If it weren't so far from my place of work we'd live in Green Cove Springs...

(We love chickens in the yard.) ; - }

We'll be traveling back and forth Phx/Jax several times before the end of the year. If we can help you at all please let us know.

Good Luck.

Dianne (and Johnne)
