I am researching relocating my family to the beach communities (Atlantic, Jacksonville, Neptune Beach) and looking for some input. I have researched church and school options and looked at trulia for an idea of housing prices. What I am missing is a sense about demographics for families. For example, the neighborhood we live in now has some kids close to our kids age, while the neighborhood next door is newer and has kids much younger. I found that there is a little league and am hoping there is some boy and cub scout opportunities. I don't need to live on a street chock full of kids, I just am hoping to find a friendly (I realize friendliness is an elusive term) neighborhood and ideally some kids close by and close in age to our four boys (13,11,8,5). Someplace where they can ride to a friend's house on their bikes like I did as a kid. Are their sidewalks in those areas? My wife and I are both runners, perhaps there is a organized running group or community? I have seen some forum comments that those areas have a strong sense of community, but nothing else to go on.

Are there any residents of those areas who care to comment? I am just trying to make the transition as easy as possible.

Thanks very much for your time.

I'm no expert on those areas, but I'd say Atlantic Beach is the most desireable neighborhood for a family, or anyone else for that matter. It's more residential than business and quite charming with plenty of businesses nearby. It doesn't have the main drags running straight through it like Jax Beach and Neptune. Jax Beach is not as nice and where all the bars and crowds are. Neptune not quite as bad, but similar.

Just my 2. Good luck.

Atlantic Beach is the more desirable beach location of the 3 mentioned. Followed by Neptune Beach and dragging in third is Jax Beach which can also be subdivided into 3 separate area's (1) south Jax Beach, (2) north Jax Beach, and (3) mainly commercial Jax Beach (of those three 1 & 2 are just OK, 3 is not)

I agree that Atlantic Beach is the most like an old fashioned neighborhood with people outside walking their dogs, jogging and kids playing. The best way to get a feel for any neighborhood is to visit during different times, park your car and walk around. Talk to the people who are out walking in the neighborhood and ask them about the area - most people will be delighted to share with you.
