There's lots more to update you about what's going on in the Springfield Historic District, as of 10/11/11.

Three Layers Cafe was just named the Best Coffeehouse in Jacksonville (again): Folio Weekly, Best of Jax Winners

Springfield’s Three Layers Café has taken the neighborhood coffee shop to dazzling new heights. In addition to classic coffee offerings, wine and beer and the signature thick-sliced cakes, featuring three layers in flavors ranging from red velvet and chocolate expression to co-owner Jeff’s latest, caramel butter cream, Three Layers is also quickly becoming the heart of the Springfield community. Should you feel a little alert after consuming all that sugar and caffeine, just go chill outside in the Zen Garden or groove to the sounds of touring and local singers and musicians like multi-instrumentalist Goliath Flores.

A variety of bike-loving residents were profiled, highlighting the bikable nature of the neighborhood: Bike Springfield | mySpringfield

“Two wheels are definitely better than four” according to Dexter Murphy, “at least in Springfield.”

This sentiment sums up how most people in the Springfield Historic District, and greater urban core, feel about the ancient, yet suddenly-chic form of transportation: the bicycle. Whether it’s the benefit to the environment, a financial decision based on gas prices, or the rediscovered simple joy of riding through the open air, bikes are definitely in in Springfield.

An Urban Agriculture forum was hosted by Sustainable Springfield, which drew a HUGE crowd, including City Council members, civic leaders, etc.

Two new home builders officially broke ground in the neighborhood (with a 3rd on the way). Yes, even in this economy. Can you say "demand"?:

and two more new businesses will be opening up on Main Street soon:

In addition to all this stuff:

Latest happenings in Jacksonville's Springfield Historic District. Yeah, it's awesome.

More good news in the Springfield Historic District ...

What's been going on in the Springfield Historic District?

Life is good in SPR. : )

Lord have mercy, Springfield, seriously? This is in the worst, most dangerous part of Jacksonville.

Was up near there on Monday on business. Tried to get a cup of coffee to see what the fuss is about, but it was closed at 9am. Aren't coffeehouses usually open in the mornings?

This just proves you have no clue of what you are talking about, as there are much worse and more dangerous area's in Jacksonville than historic Springfield.

Was in Seattle (a city famous for its coffee houses) a couple of weeks ago, for a lumber industry symposium. And just about every coffee house that we visited or saw during our stay was open at 6AM and did not close until 10PM on average. (7 days a week)

And unlike 3 Layers and Bakery Moderne all of the coffee houses in Seattle we visited, were just that. Coffee houses not bakery's that serve coffee. But coffee houses that had a small selection of fine pastries, to compliment their many styles of coffee.

The struggles of Three Layers are well-documented on metrojacksonville.com

Theres just not enough demand anymore for them to be open early. And they've begun to hike up their prices (outrageously or not, depending on who you listen to). Just some of the problems discussed.

I, for one, think the place is great and have never had any issues there. Hope they can maintain the support they've enjoyed over the years and fix whatever service issues that some customers have encountered.

I'll guess they probably don't ride their bike to work, so stopping for coffee is a little inconvenient to the morning routine. (just keeping to the thread title. )
