Car Free in Jacksonville? Is it even possible? I Found this site that says it is. Whats your take?

Car-Free in Jacksonville

A short guide to Jacksonville, Florida, with special attention given to its more transit-accessible, walkable neighborhoods.

I had not seen the site you posted before, and dont have time to read it through right now, but Michael Lewyn used to have a blog (probably still does) with essentially the same title. He is a former law prof at Florida Coastal who has since moved on to some other school, but during his time in Jax he spoke regularly about the transit system here, often posting on metrojacksonville.com I think that was one of his specialties...urban policy law or something of that nature. Not really sure about that, but it certainly was one of his key interests in general.

Kind of depends on what you want to do - and how much time you're willing to spend doing it. Yesterday we ate lunch at bb's - then went to MOCA - and then come home to PVB. Today we had lunch on Southside - went over to Mandarin to do some shopping at Whole Foods - and then home again. Can you imagine trying to do that without a car? Robyn

Yes, if you live in a walkable neighborhood. No if you don't. In general, no you can't live without a car in Jax.

No one said it would be easy!!! I for one couldn't/wouldn't even attempt it. But then as far out in the country where I live it's not even feasible. But if as we plan and move into the Riverside/Avondale area maybe we will try to rely less on our vehicles.

Jacksonville was designed to be car-reliant due to the infrastructure.

When exactly did this car reliant design happen? When people started moving to the far flung suburbs of Springfield and Riverside? Or in the early 60's when the expressway construction phase started booming? Or after consolidation in 67? I don't believe much of it was designed but actually occurred in a hap hazard fashion up until consolidation.

The electric streetcar system in Jax was shut down in 1936. That's when the autos took over.

I agree the auto is king in Jax. What I am questioning is the design part. I don't believe that any planning went into the design of Jax until consolidation happened.

Well, I think it's semantics. You're right...it could be called the "lack of planning" that designed the sprawling nature of growth, even prior to consolidation. White flight, anyone?
