Come to think of great seafood places- I remember there was a place at Julington creek- but I forget the name. And of course I grew up eating at Whities Fish Camp on Dr's Lake (Well, Swimming Pen creek actually)

Unfortunately, Jackie's is gone. The one on Julington Creek...Clark's Fish Camp? If that's the one it's still there and has expanded again and again. When I was little it wasn't even a restaurant, just pilings with a roof on it.

Jackies Seafood was a cool pleace and Jackie was a nice lady. After a bad fire, the place was rebuilt and it continued until Jackie passed away and her kids did'nt want to bother with the business anymore and sold it. The new place did not last long. I too remember all the boiled peanut vendors on Heckscher drive plying their wares....and they were pretty good...and the "old" zoo with Casey Jones "body" buried by the railroad...and I met many an airplane at the old Imeson Airport and one of my first jobs with Southern Bell was dis assembling the massive phone system out there and removing it all. I do have a few choice souveniers from that place though...and Josephs' Pizza and Italian Restaurant on Main Street was always a neat place and the food was GREAT !! U S 17 was quite a drive to Yulee back then and hang a right to Fernandina....NOTHING was there on that drive to speak of until you got close to Fernandina....and we just made the big loop and came back on A1A and took the ferry back across to Mayport....and went to Singletons and maybe spent a few hours at the Mayport Haunted house...ooooooooooooooo...LOL...and the road in was just a two land narrow road....and going to Jax Beach...and the flag pavillion for concerts....and hitting the "boardwalk" to play the games...and I too remember the old Fair at the old Gator Bowl and Coliseum....man, that was so cool...and lounging around in the upper decks of the coliseum and drinking and smoking....and watching the cheezy shows...they did have some good country stars though....and i hated that guy in the dunking booth...what and obnoxious ass he was...but I guess he sold a lot of throws that way...Happy turkey day to you ALL !!!!!

And believe it or not, I can remeber the Fuller Brush man that made a routine route thru our neighborhood and would always leave some gadget when he left.
|
My mother used to buy things from Fuller Brush all the time.
Another memory that just came to me: Perrett's Dairy delivering milk to the house in glass bottles (the ones with the paper stoppers in them).

I remember the Dorcas Drake Christmas parties and toy drives every year at Christmas when I was a kid.
|
Dorcas Drake's office (she was a Justice of the Peace) was next to Andrew Jackson HS on W 30th near the corner at Pearl Street (beside the public library). I went to high school with her daughter Jonetta at AJ.
Somebody mentioned Burger Chef (or as my sister and I used to call it, Burger Sh*t). I had forgotten all about them.
I read an article about my old elementary school, North Shore. The article said that a new school is being built on the site. Progress is great, but I can't help thinking that yet another important part of my past is succumbing to the wrecking ball.

Oh wow! Perrett's Dairy! I remember going on a field trip to the dairy when I went to Dinsmore Elementary school! I also remember going to the old Sunbeam Bread Bakery- I seem to remember that being out off 20th st expressway/Kings road?
My Dad and uncles and aunts all graduated from AJ in the 50's/60's
Remember when the grocery stores were either Winn-Dixies or A&P's? I remember the old A&P that was on Main and maybe 18th or 19th?
I also remember Pantry Pride stores being a popular 'budget' supermarket- I think there was one at the Normandy mall. My second job was at the 'Century Showcase' that was at Normandy.
I remember Christmas eve mass at the Episcopal Cathedral downtown, I remember a weekend 'highlight' would be when my Dad and I would come into 'town' from the 'country' and go to some newsstand downtown- But for the life of me I can't remember the name of the place- My treat was picking out 3 comic books and a couple of car magazines each trip lol-
I also remember going to Mayport when the USS Franklin D Roosevelt (CV-42) was stationed there- We had a family friend that was on her and we would always go down when she was coming home from Med cruises.
...I also always remeber referring to any Navy personnel as 'Squids'

I remember Denny Moran's Shrimp Boat on San Juan across from the KC Bar B que restaurant.
Does anyone remember when Rock105 the radio station started? I think the first DJ's were some guy named Chris and a woman DJ- I forget her name though. Its hard to believe that 'the Greaseman' is there now......
Is the 666 Cold Tablets building and sign still there?

My dad was a teacher at North Shore. He was nicknamed Mr. A (for Alvarez). He also taught at several other schools in Jax, including Kings Trail, Holiday Hill, Alimacani, San Pablo... He is retired but still works at San Pablo when they need him.
He is also retired Coast Guard. The stories he tells about boarding tankers at Blount Island are the best!

Yeah, Jimbo...it was "hiiiiiiiiighhh and drrrryyyy"...and he would rip into whomever was near and God help you when you stepped up to throw the ball.....FOUL....he would talk about your momma, daddy, girlfriend...whom ever....in later years, they actually had hired a couple of off-duty cops to stand by the booth to keep people from getting to him....good grief, he was unmerciful....I went to the fair with my son and grandson this year....and my son and I, when he was a boy, would find a bench close by the guy and watch him for hours....but eveidently he was not there this year....

Not-Rodders
I grew up in Jax in the seventies and eighties. My dad grew up there in the early fifties. Every time I come home to Jacksonville, it is more and more congested. It bothers me, but it really bothers my dad. I think I now know why. THERES NOWHERE LEFT TO HAUL A**! For all you hot rodders out there Id love to here your stories. My dad talked of state road 17 being nothing all the way to Green Cove. Once there, they would run on an old abandoned
airstrip. Heck, I remember hauling down Philips highway, Racetrack road. I just heard even thats totally built up. By the way, is Greenbriar "Ghost-light" road in St Johns still "haunted" or is there a Chili's in front of a strip mall inside of a mall parking lot there?

Hi Ex-Pat, The Southside Saddle Club used to be located just beside Burnett Park on Burnett Park road in Mandarin. I rode there as a kid in the very late 60's and early 70's. Then it was off to FSU in 1973. For a while I kept my horse at a barn right across the street. We also occasionally rode at Clay Mavericks. I believe they used to operate on Saturday nights and the SSS Club operated on Friday night. Those were fun days!!
The Southside Saddle Club has moved further out. Here is a link to their site.
