Been up in the Mountains for the past week...it is so good to see this string going on. Thanks to all of you for the memories. How many of you remember the "Amber House" downtown by Hemming Park where ALL the busses came. It was a VERY interesting hangout. And whta was the name of that luggage store that was down there for years. I got a lot of belts and suit cases repaired there. And I just remembered the old A & W drive in on the corner of University and Beach Blvd.....mmmmmmmm...good.

You know, I hate to admit it, but I don't remember exactly where it was. I believe that it was somewhere near the point where Beach and Atlantic blvds joined near San Marco. Maybe someone out there remembers.

Century 21 Apartments- they were the epitome of 'cool' when I was young. The bar that used to be in there I forget the name was a good hangout.
Thunderbirds...I either walked right in or got in with my fake id. Guess that was back in '85.

The big club on Arlington Rd was the Playground South, my brother owned it. I would come down from Wis. during Spring Break and got to drink for free. In fact, I liked it so much I moved here after graduation.

When we were dating my husband and I would go to Krystal's on Atlantic, and get as many burgers as we could for $5, then drive out to the beach. We still joke about that. We also liked going to Nick's Pizza on Beach Blvd just after the bridge. That was some good pizza. What about Po Folks!

Remember when the Matthews Bridge would change to one way for a few hrs during rush hour. If you were going down town from Arlington, you better get over the bridge before it changed or you had to drive all the way to the Hart Bridge. I hated having to pay that toll!

Yeah, that one-way bridge & expressway was nuts. Tied up a lot of cops twice a day controlling the traffic.

There were tolls on the Matthew's, the Hart, the Fuller Warren; and wasn't there a toll on I-95 at the Trout River bridge?. Can't remember if there was a toll on the Acosta. Imagine all those Northerners passing thru Jax on I-95. Their first intro to our city was stopping on the interstate to pay a toll.

Ahhh the infamous toll-booths!

-Fuller Warren at Baptist med center
-Hart Bridge on the Atlantic Blvd side
-Matthews on the east side at Jones College
-I-95 at Trout River

I remember the toll being a quarter? or was it more....

Acosta, Main St and Buckman were free.

Remember when the Buckman was only 4-lanes? (2 each way)

I think the toll ended up at 35 cents, could be wrong. Then there were the coupon books ...

Even at 8 lanes, the Buckman is still an awful drive during am & pm rush hour. At least twice a week, I'll hear a traffic report on the radio; "watch out for the ladder on the Buckman". Never anywhere else in Jax, just on the Buckman .

I don't even remember anything called Thunderbird's now that I think about it!

Remember River Rally and Crawdaddy's? River Rally was always the place to be on New Year's or St. Patty's day. Crawdaddy's was mowed down. It's an empty lot now and such a senseless waste of riverfront property.

How about Darryl's restaurant at the intersection of Arlington Exp and Atlantic? Every table had a theme, and one of them was an old elevator cantilevered over the first floor. They had a second location on Baymeadows Rd.
