They specialized in a candy called "Annaclairs" and the candy came in a black box with silver writing. No one believes me when I talk about Sears &Roebuck in downtown Jax. It was the greatest store. It had a garden shop a smoke shop a coffee shop and three cosmetic counters. It also had a bakery and a candy counter. Upstairs there was a really nice restaurant called the Jean Ribault room. Anyone remember this?--dcarlo

I remember going to the Sears downtown when I was a kid in the late sixties..they had the greatest toy dept. downstairs...it seems to me that it was actually in the basement? Anyway, we used to eat in the Ribault restaurant all the time & you could look out over downtown from there. Was really sad to see the old Sears store go...that was where my mom bought my brothers & I most of our school clothes & where she bought appliances etc. Great memories of the place!

Graduated from Ribault in 72. The hill at Skateorama - for sure a spooky looking place. Had a lot of Mama-burgers. Just bought a bottle of Pig sauce for the house. The best! Had a lot of friends who went to Jackson. I went to elementary school with a lot of them. Used to work at the Pantry Pride at Gateway. Yep, the North Jetty and the flats. Got stuck there a few times. Friend of mine who lives in Texas thinks the NJ still still has some of the best breaks, when it breaks. Surfed mostly at Crosswards or Bells. My first board was a freebee made by my uncle. First one I ever bought was from Monkey Wards at Gateway Shopping Center. Man, that stirs up old memories. Concerts, yep. Led Z, Lynard Skynard, Allman Brothers, dozen others. Somebody asked about the Spectrum. Met my first wife there. We won't go there.

Do you mean either 'the Greaseman' ? or maybe Alan Moore? two different jocks of course, but they were the 'voice' of WAPE in the mid-70's that I remember- Moore's 'tagline' was "This.......(loong pause).....is Alan Moore"
I went to OPHS from '75 to '79 and I certainly remember the Monkey Farm- It was abandoned initially, then ended up as an office park by the time I graduated. Heck, when I started at OPHS, there was the school, and the Publix on the other side of Kingsley and that was about it! then the Kmart came, then the Racetrack Gas station, (and we bitched about gas being 75 cents a gallon!), then the movie theaters (That we streaked a few times ;-) ) and of course the hospital and more importantly, Sonny's BBQ!
Apanda and RockSteadyVibe mentioned Normandy mall- I spent a lot of time there too- My sister worked in the Monkey Wards there for a long time- Furniture Dept. A couple things I remember about that area- The Orange Julius of course- Cheese Hotdogs- Watching Peter Sellers 'Pink Panther' movies with my dad in the theaters, there was a restaurant across Normandy from the mall- 'Southern Table' or something like that? does anyone remember that? Also, by the Wendy's that if I remember was one of the 1st in Jax, wasn't there a 'Lotta-burger' or 'Whatta-Burger' on the opposite side of the street? I remember there being a gas station there at the corner of Cassat and Normandy, and then a Watta-Burger/Lotta-Burger a bit further down Cassat- There was a '69 Pontiac Grand Prix for sale at that gas station that I wanted sooo badly- They wanted like $1000 bucks in 1980, and I had no money.....wish I had been able to buy it lol.
Does anyone remember Applejacks? It was on San Marco by the bridge? (Near the RC Cola plant and the 'Clarks Burger's' grocery?) ....For that matter, do you guys remember the 'Clarks burger' ads?
Has anyone mentioned 'Beach Road Chicken Dinners' ?? Are they still there?
Someone mentioned 'Sir Gooney Golf', spent a lot of time there..... How about the race-cart track that was on Roosevelt right before I-295? They gave you a 'license' to drive the carts. Then right by there was the old Navy surplus yard that used to have old WWII aircraft there for salvage? I remember a couple old F4 Corsairs rotting in the Fla sun there for years.

I definitely remember Applejacks! Saw some great performers there & hung out there a lot in the early 80's..the place had a great atmosphere & good food...the owners went on after Applejacks to create 'The Loop' restaurants...Applejacks had local bands play & was one of the few places in town where you could see artists like John Sebastian, Hot Tuna & lots of others

I made a lot of really good friendships in those days. Trying to locate some of those people but not having much luck. Right after I moved back in 1995 I heard that they had an Applejack's reunion at Cecil's in Arlington but I missed it.

I used to live in the Lakewood Area & we would go to Applejack's nearly every weekend. Saw a lot of great performers plus some local bands. We also used to go see the Stewart/Tussing band as a friend of mine dated one of the guys in the band, they were unusual in that they had a cello player (Gary Tussing) which gave them a rather unique rock sound.
Applejacks had a great atmosphere & good food & I have a lotta great memories of the place!

Waldz had some serious cheescake! Town & Country Shopping Center. Saw "Flubber" there in its first showing.

WOW !
Haven't heard the name Driscoll in ages. There were two or three places growing up there where teens were almost guaranteed to get in, Driscoll's was one. The lounge at Century 21 Apts in Arlington was another and Nickels Ally was another one. Nickels was great if you didn’t mind getting stabbed or at the very least watching a stabbing.
If I was alone and feeling melancholy. I could get into the piano lounge at the Sea Turtle in Neptune Beach and drink my blues away all I wanted.
And Merrill Road Lake was still clean enough to swim in.
Last time I went there, man, Baymeadows road was like a city all to its self. I remember when the only things out there were Deerwood, Baymeadows Apartments (Phase I) and the lil’ Champ about a quarter mile down the road near South Side Blvd. You went any further than that and they’d have to send a rescue party out find you.

Another restaurant was the Green Turtle on Phillips. And just up the road was Stricklands and one of my parent's favorites was Brewmasters (Good steak, Good cheer. Free wine. Free beer.) It burned down. It was near a bolwing alley that has beedn converted to storage or industrial. And just up the road from them at the corner of Phillips and University was a drive-in theater.
Mandarin had Joe Curry's. It was an old time grocery store at the corner of SR 13 and Mandarin Road. He also had a miniature train that you could take a ride through the organe groves on for 25˘. That was back when San Jose (State Road 13) was only two lanes.
There was a Krystal's across the street from Bishop Kenny (now Pulido's). Frangi's Italian restaurant where the Thrift Store now is on Atlantic just up the street from BK. And a bit later and right next door was JoAnn's Chili Bordello. A few miles up Beach, and past the aforementioned Uncle Johns and A&W, was Patti's Italian Restaurant.
Over in Brooklyn (I didn't even know it was called that until a few years back) was the Green Derby. I think the Blue Cross Blue Shield Building is there now.
Henderson's, sad to say. turned into a strip club.
The beach used to have a great boardwalk complete with a roller coaster and ferris wheel. Then, it became the "Blighted Area". BUT there were a few great bars to see live music like Jane's Addiction, The Meat Puppets, 10,000 Maniacs. Downtown had a few great music spots as well in Metropolis (live music almost every night) that became the Milk Bar (The Pixies. Limp Biscuit.)
As far as sports go. I recall the Jacksonville Sharks pro football before the Bulls. Although I did see a Bulls game with four Heisman trophy winners on the field at the same time. (Doug Flutie, Hereshell Walker, Steve Young & Jim Kelly). The Teamen won the ASL Championsip in 1983. The NASL had already failed.) And JU almost had a national championship in the early 70's when Artis Gilmore, Pembrook Borroughs, Chip Dublin, Rex Morgan and ??? started). I have a souvenir bat from the Jacksonville Tars Baseball team. Does ANYONE remember them?
The OLD Acosta Bridge.
When the Buckman Bridge was THE bridge to nowhere.
9A didn't exist. Nor did Flemming Island. Only farmers and and old Florida families lived off 210 on either side of I-95. It was Nine Mile Road, not International Golf Parkway. It was the GJO (Greater Jacksonville Open) not the TPC and it was played at Deerwood or Hidden Hills.
Gotta run… this has been fun!

Okay. . . we always ate at the Krystal's in Arlington. I still have to schedule a stop whenever I'm in town. I know there's still one at the beach. In high school, I attended Sandalwood, the guys use to have Krystal eating contests. That often got out of hand, but then again, it's not really food I don't think. And Hendersons, that's where I spent my 18th birthday. A little ugly, at least I was of age.

Greetings my dear friends. The Surf Shop on Beach Boulevard that was, at that time, in the woods by itself was "Underwater Designers"...it had surfboards, dive stuff, wet suits and the like...and some Hawaiian Flowerdy shirts too...a neat place. Of course, it got sold when the wheels of "Progress" moved further East...too bad. Thanks for the posts and keeping this string going...it does bring back a lot of memories....and about "The Greaseman"...the Baptist Church got him off the air just 2 weeks after he landed here...but the management of the station had the sense to tell them to get stuffed and he was back on the air being an "equal Opportunity Offender"...LOL...and i will close with one of my favorite DJ's show closings...."keep on keepin' on....be too stupid to quit."
