Panotchr, it's a small world. I ran into the Peyton bros last week at the Wayne Henderson Festival in Va, and got their new cd. I got home and read the liner notes and your father was mentioned, got me searching the internet for old clips and stuff, and I found this thread during that. I grew up in and around Jacksonville (Middleburg, actually) and moved to the Charlotte NC area (Fort Mill SC) about 4 years ago. It's ok, but Fla is home and I find myself looking stuff up from there a lot. I knew the Peytons played European Street cafe and got good reviews too. I'm playing there myself this Thursday (the San Marco location) and then Tallahassee Friday before heading back home. That is one of my favorite gigs, good food, good room, and great people.

Sorry, back on topic. Somebody mentioned a restaurant on Blanding near I-295 called something Smorgasbord- would that be Sly's Smorgasbord? It was right next door to Mr. D's BBQ, which is where we would go. Also, somebody mentioned Stricklands Landing in Starke but couldn't remember the name of the place next to it, that would be Kingsley Beach. They were both owned by the Stricklands, but one allowed drinking and one didn't. Folks would drink on the Kingsley side and then swim to the Strickland side to use the slides and stuff, if I am remembering that correctly.

The talk of the radio stations, but no mention of the country stuff. Marshall Rowland owned WQIK- quick country. Frank Thies was the dj back then. We also had WVOJ for a few years as a country station, they also gave daily fishing reports.

Yes, I remember the A&W; real root root beer out of a barrel, instead of steel tanks like today.

There are no more 7-11's in Jax - hasn't been one that I know of for decades. I miss Slurpees.
Wasn't the store Jackson minit-mart? Sort of a 7-11 type

7-11's were here when I moved to Jax in '68, (and they were also all over Newport News, where I moved from). They were gradually pushed out of the market by local franchises. Some of these might not be exactly correct, but in addition to Jackson's, there was Magic Mart (was Magic spelled some other way?), Lil' Champ, and one or two others I can't remember.

There were "Jiffy Marts" for a while to. Thanks Allan for remembering WVOJ, my mom listened to that station for years when I was a kid. I could not remember the call letters to save my life. Back then Robbie Rose was the traffic reporter, before he became so famous.....

How surprised I was to see my name on this site. I don't know who you are, but I'm glad you like my name.

Eh? Annie Tiques was the name of a restaurant/bar at/near Regency Square during the late 70s/early 80s...

I still think that the best spot ever was AnnieTiques in the parking lot of Regency Square. Every Thursday night at mid-night that place was the best for meeting girls and partying. Met this really cool girl there once. She lived at the beach. She had the best name of any girl I ever met, Eden Brew.

Keep it going guys, this forum is terrifiic fun.
Hey Sawtooth235. So glad you liked my name, and remembered after all this time. Those were some great times. I did move on to NYC, and come back and forth. Did we dance?

Just getting online with this site and it's too great. Not sure how to navigate yet, but here goes. That restaurant you're referring to was called "12 North" and I was a hostess there for one great year of a time before graduating Fletcher. Ceasar was the Manager and David Left (Lefty) was the maitre'd and David ? (Doughboy) was head waiter. Maxine Greene was the singer of the band and also played the nightclub on top of Holiday Inn, where I was also a hostess in the waterfront restaurant. Too much fun!!

Thanx for the tip. I'm site challenged; and blog challenged for that matter.
