This is a long shot because you guys haven't talked about food much, but does anyone remember a bakery called May Cohen's? I think the spelling is right. My entire family is from Jax and though I spent many summers there as a kid and a bit of high school, this place had closed down before I got a chance to eat there. I have heard many, many, many stories of these fabulous cinnamon buns and biscuits from there. I love bread, so too bad for me, but my whole family waxes nostalgic about this bakery so I'm just wondering if any of you had heard of what happened to this place.

There was a May-Cohens department store at one point, originally it was called Cohen Brothers; but I don't recall a May-Cohens bakery. Sorry.
By the way, the city has a good history web site here. Cheers! M2 |

There were so many good places to eat back in the 70's and 80's. My dad used to take me to a BarBQ place on the westside called the Red Barn (near Cassat Ave. I think) that was great. We would go to Whitey's Fish Camp (still there and kind of a weekend HOTSPOT now with live bands) for All You Can Eat catfish dinners.
In college, one of my buddy's (Raleigh McKool) dad owned a restaurant supply company so my buddy knew all the good places to eat and drink. Remember Nichol's Alley, The Tree Steak House off of Cesery in Arlington, The Wine Cellar downtown, and the Mai Kai lounge was always full of pretty ladies for Friday happy hour, The Thunderbird hotel had a great bar with live music, and I used to wait table at a place called The Cork-N-Cleaver that had a 4 for 1 happy hour on Monday nights, Victoria's Station had a train motif and Annie Tiques with the Thursdays at midnight DJ were both off of the Arlington Expressway, and for breakfast it was Sambo's or Famous Amos (owned by the Busch Series driver Patty Moise's family, I went to JU with Patty). That's all I can remember for now, I'm getting old. |

Beach Blvd - I remember when it was all woods, save the RollerRink, Zayres, the driving range and Scuba Diving Place. I remember the fire (80? 81?) and driving through the smoke.

Ahh...the Beach Blvd RollerRink...I did spend a lot of my early teen years there. Man, that brings back memories! Sad part is I still listen to the same music that I used to skate to...Styx' Renegade, Brothers Johnson's Strawberry Letter 23, stuff like that! I used to smoke menthol cigarettes while skating when I could get them (I was still under age, but we had our ways!), I remember the cool buzz those things would give...and the plastic tables and seats they had outside the rink. The walls were covered in carpet, so if you fell down and tried to grab them, you could get some nasty carpet burns! And how weird it was when the DJ had everyone stop and skate in the opposite direction...those were some great times!
Cheers! M2 |

Yeah - I lived in San Marco in 1974 and 1975 and I was in Applejack's almost every night. I moved to St. Pete then but I visited until 1981 before heading west until 1995. I made a lot of really good friendships in those days. Trying to locate some of those people but not having much luck. Right after I moved back in 1995 I heard that they had an Applejack's reunion at Cecil's in Arlington but I missed it.
