Redgiant,
Good post. Growing up in Killarney Shores, you must have came across Jimbo. He was another MX'er that rode the trails at Grove Park and Beach Blvd. He lived in the same neighborhood. Jimbo was always at the sand mines off Southside Bvld. Tattersol Apartments was built where we used to park and ride in sand mines.
I saw Rick(Rick Cycles) at the post offfice this week. Ron Turner was at that location later, but moved next door, now he's gone. Jim Davis, another MX'er is in the old building.
How can we ever forget the Mid-Way and University drive in's. Hot summer nights wth all the mosquitos.
Remember Big Daddy's and the water tower at the J. M. Fields.
Driving to the beach was like driving thru the woods. All the land was undeveloped.
Jacksonville was dry on Sunday, so everyone drove to the beach or mandarin to buy beer.
I still live in Alderman Park and have seen many changes. Regency Mall especially. Too bad, ..Regency is very convenient.
Thanks for the memories.

Actually, the Alhambra has recently closed - sorry! The Sheik is still open, though. It's been fun to read your old Jax memories!!

Used to stop by the Dive Shop pretty often. Friends of mine bought the Califano boards. Short - seems like 5'6" or so. I remember a "hang-gliding" class was going to be offered at one time - off of the sand cliffs off Ft. Caroline Rd. I signed up for them but looking back I'm glad that didn't happen (to my knowledge anyway). The shop brings back some good memories.

Several more random memories. We always visit Ragtime at Neptune Beach when we visit. It use to be a drug store. Can't recall the name. The door was on the corner as I recall. The bar that is across the street that now has upstairs seating sold beachwear in the 60's. It is good to see the Neptune Beach town square booming with bands on the weekends and good food.
There use to be a BBQ place going in town toward Jax on the right just several miles before the main street bridge. Was it Lou Bonos? Excellent pit cooked BBQ.
In the late 50's, early 60's we went to the Oasis Bar just south of Ponte Vedra. It was a bar on the beach with bands and dancing outside on the beach side of the building.
We also use to meet further south at an area to go to the sand dunes at night and build a fire on the beach and stay just about all night. It was a meeting place for many teens to get away from the tourists.

The original Bono's is still there on Beach Blvd ... and Harvey Green is still the "Cutter" - he's been there since 1956.
There are more than a dozen Bono's scattered around Jax ... and 2 in Colorado for some reason.
I'd eat there 4 times a week if my wife would let me.

I would like to hear from "Florida PADI College" students who graudated from the college
early 1970's to 1991. I was the president/owner of college, and Underwater Designers
Co. 4591 St. Johns Avenue and 13637 Beach Blvd., Jacksonville, Florida. My wife is looking
up previously graduates from the college. I really miss it!
Best regards,
Paul J. Califano, Owner/President

noland123, I saw Mrs. Virgina A. Keys today, she is very funny and beautiful and a lovely lady, well and happy, I have talked to her many times. She's still just as friendly as ever. If you happen to run into her you will know her right away, she hasn't changed much at all.
