I made a lot of really good friendships in those days. Trying to locate some of those people but not having much luck. Right after I moved back in 1995 I heard that they had an Applejack's reunion at Cecil's in Arlington but I missed it.
That's about the time that I was there. Do you remember Walt? He worked at a place that made dental crowns. I heard from him years later, but have lost touch. And for the life of me, I can't remember his last name.

And there was Rick who worked for the railroad in the dining car.

I lived on Belmont in a garage apartment. If you were there a lot, I'm sure that I must have smoked you in a game of pool a time or two.

Ah, the days of hedonism!

I remember Walt but not the last name. Was he kind of a tall guy? I lived on Belmont for a while myself in 1975, right across the street from a couple of people who worked there. We need to email each other about this so we don't have to toss out names in public, so to speak. Feel free to email me at Tug524@hotmail.com .

Wow- I just found this board and feel like I have another thing to be grateful for this Thanksgiving. I was born and raised in Jacksonville and have been combing the net for places to find out info. about the Jax. I remember. Thanksgiving takes me back to Christmas time and visiting Santa at the old May-Cohen's downtown. When I found this thread and began to read, I felt as if I was transported to 1960-61. Does anyone remember visiting Santa at the May-Cohen's- I believe he was on the second floor just as you came up the elevator.

The restaurant there was terrific. A special place to eat with your friends when you were shopping and I always loved it when my mom would take me there on a Saturday afternoon. May-Cohen use to have a wonderful Christmas window from Santa's workshop complete with animated characters-Mrs. Claus was stirring fudge in a big pot. I also loved the downtown Furchgott's and the Rosenbloom's across the street.

We lived in Arlinngton and I graduated from Terry Parker in 1972- I remember when Regency Mall was built and was a wonderful place to shop!

Happy Holidays to everyone

Annie Tiques was about where Sears at Regency is now. They had expensive hamburgers, and that's all I remember. Anyone remember Lum's restaurant? How about Nichol's Alley, from the disco era? It was in the K-Mart shopping Center on Beach at University, as I recall.

I saw Raiders of the Lost Ark in the Expressway Mall theater, just torn down. I also got my hair cut by King Arthur in that mall, shopped at Rose's, which became Century House and other stores, and later ate at Duff's Smorgasbord next door.

Speaking of movies, Star Wars opened at the Plaza Theater, which is now converted to something else. Emerson and Phillips Highway.

Where the Wal Mart is near Regency, all that sand, was the dumping ground of Nutri-Gro ("For Greener Grass"), which I think pumped septic tanks and dumped it in the dunes. That's why the area smells that way today.

Here's a great website about the beaches beach50s

Here's another bit of Jax nostalgia. Who knew there was once a grass airstrip at the beach?

Emerson & Phillips is coming along (getting cleaned up). There's a SuperWalmart there now, a huge transportation warehouse (Priority) just to the south of it, and a lot of other infill starting to happen (a new Home Depot going in @ University too).

No smell anymore that I'm aware of @ the Walmart at Regency (at least nothing too noticeable when driving through). The sand lots are being developed (townhomes or condos? Plus some shopping).

We smell it when conditions are right. Maybe they've added topsoil or something to cover it with that new development. Anyone know what they're building? It'll be nice to be able to take Lone Star Road all the way to this area.

I remember Hope Haven Children's Hospital by Publix on Atlantic near University (which I'm told was once a drive-in theater). They've started construction on the 168 or so apartments there now, 13 years after tearing down the hospital. That's going to wreak havoc on Atlantic Blvd. traffic.

It's going to be a continuation of Kendall Town. So I'm not sure if the housing will be townhomes or condos, but there will be housing and commercial (more stores).
