Based on the Jacksonville Florida Crime Statistics and Data Resources it does not look good, but population is the highest in the state. See site below. The answer to your question is population.....

I did compare Orlando, Miami, Pensacola, etc and the percent ratio is not bad. Jville leads the state population very difficult to compare:
Jville: 790,972
Tampa:324,704
Orlando: 203,764
Tallahassee:157,358
Pensacola: 56,117

Jacksonville is a very unusual city in that the city of Jacksonville and Duval County merged a number of years ago and the city limits were extended to the county limits; they are one and the same.

Therefore, there is really no "Jacksonville Metropolitan Area" that includes a bunch of other cities in the same metropolitan region; there is just Jacksonville. If you linclude some of the smaller cities surrounding the larger city in the other metropolitan areas, you might get a more clear picture. In some cases, it's not even enough to compare county numbers. For example, it could be argued that Tampa/St. Pete is a single metropolitan area, even though they are separate cities and in two different counties.

Now, I haven't done any of the above comparisons, so I'm just guessing, but I think it's somewhat of a "scientific" guess.

The real, often-repeated fact is that one can make statistics appear any way one likes. What's the old phrase, "Figures lie and liars figure?"

Jacksonville is the state's largest city (and the country's largest in land area, with 800+ square miles).
Most people refer to where they live, Southside, Mandarin,Westside, Northside, or the Beaches
Sadly a large percentage of the crime seems to be in the lower economic areas. There has been a push from the Mayors office to get a lager police presence into these areas to bring the crime down.
I have lived in the Southside/beaches area for the past 14 years the crime in this area is very low.
Jacksonville is really not that much different than allot of large cities. I grew up in Phila and there were areas that had higher crime rates, the same with New York.
I would tell anyone thinking of moving to Jacksonville the same thing I would say to anyone wanting to move to Phila, New Jersery or New York, take time to check out the area you are intrested in.
Sadly no city is crime free, but don't let general statistics "scare" you away from a city.

Ocean City as in NJ !! I love that town, every summer we would spend 2 weeks in the "family" section. lol
We would rent bikes and ride up and down the boardwalk every morning.
I have also spent some time in Boston another great city.
lol I DJ'd a wedding in Camden 20 yrs ago, it was in a stone Church hall with no A/C and about 98 degrees then the power went out.
I need a Philly fix, cheese steaks, pizza, soft pretzels and tasty-kakes

Hi there! My family is thinking of moving to the jax area and really want to know if Jax is a redneck baptist conservative racist city. Although I believe every one has a right to their own opinions I dont want to be in a place that is obviously concervative. I would really like your opinion. Other suggestions on better northern Fla cities. We are a mixed race family and really want tomove to Fla.. Thanks Kim

Well, let's keep it real, YES there's a lot of redneck in Jax, YES you'll work with them, but I believe that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, rednecks in Jax are pretty much like gays in San Francisco, they are everywhere, and they don't hide it. I think they have more confederate flags down there than they have US flags, I kidd you not...lol. You'll be allright, but yes there's a lot of them

There are also a lot of us loud former yankees here in Jax lol.
The neighborhood on the Souithside I live in is very culturally diverse as well religiously diverse I also have friends who are gay and have no problems
I don't think you would have any problems on the Southside or Beaches area.
IMO there are more rednecks on the Westside and Northside
Stay away from the northwest side as that is where all the crime is 90% of the murders we have had this year happen there.
Remember Jacksonville is a big Military town, we have Mayport and NAS jax so you are going to have an influx of all types.
hope this helps

Thumbs up Foreclosures Linked to Violent Crime

This is a new report from Jville, how foreclosures are directly increasing the crime scene.

Start Video

First Coast News

JACKSONVILLE, FL -- A close examination of the numbers shows foreclosed homes in the city are in the same areas where many murders take place.

The Jacksonville Area Legal Aid held a news conference to draw attention to that relationship and the problem with its sees with predatory lending.

***** is a 55 year-old grandmother who faces losing her home. Legal aid is providing assistance as the non profit group believes she's a victim of predatory lending.

***** says of the foreclosure experience, "It was a real nightmare. Your dream of owning your own home and threat of losing it."

Legal aid in researching the numbers found the highest murder levels are also the zip codes with the highest foreclosure rates.

Zip codes 32206, 32208 and 32209 had nine, nine and eleven murders so far this year.

***** who heads up Legal Aid says, "Less foreclosures as the study says equals less murder, more foreclosures equals more murders."
