The poker room in the new regency area is quite good for the city.
For starters, seeing the incline in sales in local businesses cannot be denied. The area has been losing businesses yet the addition of the new room gives hope of improving business for them.
Secondly, the poker room donates lots of money and pays lots of taxes to be there even further helping the city. Its constant donations, charity drives are all another plus.
Poker, unlike house casino games is more of a upscale game. The people I see play are classy and not drunks who you see hacking over a slot machine or craps table. (Not to say all craps or lot players are such).
The area was nicely built, well lit, maintained and I've noticed a bunch of security including the Jacksonville Sheriffs department every time I've played all insuring ur play safe.
I've played as low as 1-2 limit games and witnessed much higher limits and they've claimed to spread whatever game you wish to play (pokerwise).
As far as ppl with gambling problems, well there going to gamble one way or another whether it be online, underground games or even via the lotto. Are we in kindergarden again where the actions of a extremely small group (those which don't gamble responsibly) should affect the rest of us and ruin it for those of us who like to have fun and play?

In my view of things...there is no difference.people that go to these places has lost respect for money. Why used money that you hold I'm your hand and go risk the chance of losing it. Regardless of what they admit..they hate themselves for losing their money. They be laughing and smiling but they be crying inside. These people are definently risk takes and this usually ALWAYS hurts ya. There is NEVER a winner in gambling...EXCEPT the house ...sorry..its the truth..been there done that..now i help others struck with this.

Visiting one of these places at first seem like FUN..and then without you being the last to realize it..now you are ADDICTED.. there is no way to avoid it. The only way is to NEVER visit these places. It WILL happen to you regardless of what you think. I hear and see so much destruction these internet cafe places has done to jax citizens..its horrible. It has some of these people who went in just for FUN..their homes..marriage etc. If anyone on here has a family or friend that is addicted..I'm sure u agree. You too can see how these so called entertainment only places destroys innocent peoples lives. The city talked about shutting them down..nope they joined them by only making them pay taxes on each computer. They got a piece of the pie..they said.. they legal. Destroy the citizens. As long as the owners have lobbyists like the do and continue to pay them well.. the state don't have a problem. Hell wouldn't you fight to stay open if your scam of a place made you billions a year. Most people can NOT help themselves.the city and state officials don't know..they are losing money bc citizens won't have any money to pay not even attention. Get rid of all of them !!
sounds to me like you are making excuses for the mentally weak. If people are not strong enough to not be addicted to a video game, I say yes they deserve to lose all of their money if they continue to play. If I owned one of those car title loan places a casino or racetrack would be the best place to set up a business, if what you are saying is true.

I agree with Fly. Should we shut down all the liquor stores, tattoo shops, lottery vendors, to protect all those weak souls, all those addicts who have no control?

No because those people can be exploited.

If someone has $200 in discretionary income to spend on a night out please tell me the difference between risking the $200 playing poker and spending $200 out at bars/clubs? If you are speaking pure financial implications the gambler is never going to be losing more money than the guy going to the bar/club (and most times coming out way ahead).......and will likely keep the community much safer by not driving while intoxicated.

Many individuals make a living gambling in games/events where their knowledge in this particular area give them an advantage. It isn't necessary to falsely state something as fact to accentuate your point when it simply is not. It is your opinion and your opinion of there NEVER being a winner in gambling is flat out wrong.

I am living proof that this is a falsehood. It's this kind of logic that's preventing sports betting from being legal throughout the US, costing us billions a year in revenue.

Poker is like any other game. A select few are great at it, but most people either don't have the skills or discipline to consistently excel.

The house does always win, but so does the club where people pay hundreds of dollars to pop $30 bottles.

I worked at the Jax Kennel Club for 2 months in 2001, the people really seemed to have a good time. The place was super packed during the Kentucky Derby, the dog track would show it on the big screen. I would take home at least 50 bucks a night in tips & keep the cash if cash draw was over. Its a job ill always remember. I can only imagine what the Kennel Club would be like if there were craps or roulette tables in there. Slot machines are tacky to me, but that's me. Gambling is big business, can it ruin lives? Yea, but so does marriage.

id always day dream about owning fancy juke joint casino like Sugar Ray lol ha ha...I never gamble, but I'm not against it. I can't tell you whether it is skill or luck & poker is a game I know nothing about. I know craps & my dad had a roulette table, he & his navy buddies would use when they came back from the six month sails. That was really my first taste of it.

As I said before I did work at the Kennel Club & rarely bet on the dogs, & when I did it was very little. I don't see how anyone can be skilled at gambling, it all seems based on luck.

I have been there a few times, but I like the Dog Track a lil better.
