Jay,
The city is divided into 3 regions: the Northside, the Westside and the Southside. Inside each of these 3 regions are numerous neighborhoods.
The city is sooooo big and spread-out landwise, that you'll probably want to live near your work, at least initially.
To answer your question about those 2 areas:
Southside: Yes, it is a good area. There is both the Southside region, as I pointed out above, and then there is a shrinking sub-region called the "Southside" - a neighborhood of sorts. I say it is shrinking because as the city chugs along with development, more individual name areas are being formed. As an example, an entire large region to the west of the Intracoastal Waterway used to be lumped in as the general 'Southside' but now garners its' own dedicated name: Intracoastal West. Names are a funny thing in Jax

.
Riverside: Riverside falls under The Westside. It is a young area with a bit of an urban-edgy feel. Though the area has improved in recent years, I personally would not want to live there. Were I a single guy in my 20's, I might give it a go, but with the awareness that there are some crime issues.
