The Beaches more enjoyable, better ammenities and much less traveling than the 15 miles stated above.

That's for the Riverside & Avondale historic district, not Downtown. R&A is probably the most popular and important neighborhood in Jacksonville, so yes, a self-guided walking podcast tour is pretty cool. (they have the same in Charleston, NY, and Savannah, among others places).

But, there's guided walking tours of Downtown too, just for you!

Here's a feature on them: Jacksonville Top to Bottom Walking Tour | Metro Jacksonville (pretty darn cool).

Or, speaking of Tours, you could go on a guided Bike Tour of Riverside & Avondale historic district, Springfield historic district, and San Marco through e2ride Bike Tours.

Charleston, NY, and Savannah have real history as in Revolutionary/Civil War history, Riverside/Avondale doesn't. Just some older homes that don't even come close to older home ages in Charleston, NY, and Savannah. My place in Avondale was built in the 1920's which is old, I have a friend in Charleston whose home was built in 1806. Now that's really old and historic.

Looks like the "water boat tours" had possibilities, but then the Eco tour took that upward trend and brought it right back down. Aside from the boat of babes , they all looked just about as boring as one would expect. Accept for the " find the Napoleon Bonaparte game" - Good way of making the tour thing interesting.

Exactly. If old houses are your thing I can understand but there's not the same history in the other towns offering these tours.

Personally, I grew up in the NE where ALL of the homes (just about) are old. I'm tired of looking at old homes and living in them.

But, seriously, while I get trying to push the downtown area--I'm all for it--let's face it, Jacksonville ain't even in the same ballpark as some of the other major cities in the US. I've been to most of them and downtown Jacksonville just isn't a destination like other cities such as NYC, Las Vegas, San Diego, etc. It's unfortunate but it's just the way it is.
