Default Insurance costs cheaper in SJC?

While shopping for a Florida health insurance policy for my son, one company quoted a base price that then needed to be multiplied by a rate factor depending on the county of residence. I was surprised to see that the factor for St. Johns County was 0.77 while the factor for Duval County was 1.04. That got me wondering whether Duval is more expensive for other types of insurance, too. Does property insurance and auto insurance also cost more in Duval?

We currently live in Broward (where the factor is 1.37 ) but will be moving to NE Florida in a couple of years when we retire. We love PVB but we're also looking at Jax Golf & CC, Pablo Bay and others. If insurance is 25% cheaper in St. Johns Co., that's huge for us!

Anyone? I thought maybe some of the real estate people who post here would know the answer. Has anyone who has lived in both counties ever noticed a difference in their auto or home insurance premiums?

every type of insurance , car ,home, flood and health is determined by location in the state of florida. no i am no expert, but all the quotes i recieved for the above mentioned were determined by the county i reside in here in florida. i talked to many agents that were quite informative and helpful. and i got plenty of eye opening factors. so take the time and make phone calls. you can pick a house on any real estate site and use that adress as your pretend house and they can give you an actual quote as to how much it would cost for any type of insurance you are looking for. this way you will get a real idea of what it will cost from town to town or county to county. it is time consuming but well worth . the effort. good luck to you!

I just changed my car insurance from a Duval county to a St Johns county on Monday and the price did drop about 7 % (I have USAA auto insurance), so yes Auto insurance is cheaper in St. Johns.

You can try to make this comparison for housing, but its not the same since you cant move the exact same house from duval to st johns county.

Fewer people, fewer cars, fewer risks equals lower rates!

Thanks, slim. You pretty much confirmed my suspicions. I have USAA, too, so that was helpful info.

USAA is the least expensive insurer in Florida. My independent agent is excellent and he says no one can beat their rates. I am grateful that we moved to FL before USAA stopped writing new homeowner policies here. You should check to be sure that USAA will continue to write your homeowners policy if you move from Broward to St Johns County. They told my daughter they would not continue to be her carrier if she moves from Michigan to FL.

USAA told us they could give us auto in SJC but that they would use another company for our property insurance. They said they sub out north Florida (maybe all of Florida.)

Yes, we have USAA too and they do subcontract homeowners/renters insurance through a third-party, I think mainly because of the issue from needing additional hurricane insurance. At least that's what I was told on the phone.

It is mostly stream-lined though in terms of managing the policy and subscribing to it.

I think it's really hard to generalize about different kinds of insurance. For example - Medigap insurance will cost the same in both SJC and Duval County (but will be about 40% less than the rates for the same policy in south Florida). Auto insurance may vary a little based on exact location within NE Florida - but will be based mostly on the nature of the drivers and their driving records. With property insurance - I think the most important factors will be the age of the house - what code was it built to - and where's it's located in relation to various things (ranging from the ocean to fire hydrants).
