It really doesn't matter.
Ive dated interracially my whole life (I'm in my 50's), and during the time when it wasn't cool or overly accepted.
I'm mixed and I've dated, Black, Caucasian, Hispanic, and married Asian. My current GF is Brazilian. Live your life and don't worry about the small stuff. If your a good person you will attract other good people. I personally have had only a couple of incidents with someone's dislike of who I choose to be with. Once in Daytona Beach and once in Orlando. And those were servers that should have been doing their job instead of worrying about who I was with, BTW was my wife of 15 years at the time.
Here's my thoughts from a previous post.

Jacksonville has changed a lot, but it still has a way to go.
Some people dont like it, but what can they do about it. Nothing!!
And I always say, If you dont like a certain ethnic group, they will end up in you family soon enough...
My family is currently thinking of relocating to one of the larger cities in Florida (we are mainly discussing Jacksonville, and Orlando) I have had many terrible incidents happen to me do to the color of my skin (half black and half white) the least of which probably being spat on. My husband is half white and half Asian making my daughter every race but Hispanic. I was wondering how tolerant Florida is to different races, and how tolerant they are of interracial people/ relationships. I assumed due to the large quantities of diverse cultures there this would not be an issue however, through scouring the internet I seem to find nothing but racist comments/ incidences from there whether it be whites hating blacks blacks hating whites everyone hating Hispanics...the internet makes it seem like a huge hate fest down there! What are your thoughts on the open mindedness of Florida?
U
If you live anywhere near a naval base, you should be fine. Jacksonville has a large population of interacial people. Just stay away from the rural areas & you should be fine. Florida is probably your best bet to deal in any of the states in this region. You always want to stay clear of Mississippi & Alabama.
I've lived in both Jacksonville and Orlando, for more than a dozen years each. I've also lived in several other States throughout other parts of the Country.
No question that Florida is generally more racially prejudiced than the Western and Northern parts of the USA. This is particularily true of Northern Florida, which is really more like Southern Georgia. Definitely the deep South 'buy bull' belt.
So, being that Jacksonville is located in the far Northern part of the State, it's going to generally be more prejudiced than Orlando. And that's been my experience, having lived in both cities, for several years.
I find it hard to follow Madcaps fuzzy logic. "tourists are somewhat more racist than the average everyday American." Where does that come from? I've never heard or read anything suggesting that tourists are more racist than the average American. I would think that just the opposite would be true, as tourists travel to different parts of the Country and World, and are exposed to people different than themselves.
The fact that Orlando is a very diverse, and fast growing city, with new residents and tourists visiting daily from all over the World, makes it far more tolerant than Jacksonville. All of the transient traffic from all over the World has exposed Orlando to every different type of race, creed, color, etc, so over time they have become more tolerant.
Both Jax and Orlando are fairly large cities, so you'll encounter all different types of people in both cities, but if Jacksonville or Orlando are your two choices, no question you should go with Orlando.
both cities are mostly the same, not that many differences between Orlando & Jacksonville..both cities do fight for the same resources.
This is my own two cents, based on my very limited experience in Florida. I myself am white but come from the very racially-diverse city of Toronto, and enjoy a diverse environment.
After one winter in Dunedin, which is near Tampa and St. Pete's, I note that this little town is very white, and that any blacks seem to live in very narrowly-defined neighbourhoods. I live in a fairly large 55+ condo development, and I have yet to see anyone who lives there who is black or asian or hispanic (or gay, I might add). I live near a small mall that has a dollar store and a discount supermarket, and I see lots of hispanics and blacks there, but they don't appear to hang out in the town much, nor int he restaurants. There don't seem to be integrated neighbourhoods that I've seen either.
On the other hand, very anecdotally, we have stayed in a hotel in Jacksonville twice on our way down to Florida, and have noticed a pleasantly diverse hotel clientele. But that's just an airport hotel.
That's funny. Yes, try being friendly and nice in Miami..people will look at you like your crazy. Try opening the door for someone and they will avoid you or make it into something bad. It's sad. I also agree that not all rednecks are racist or KKK members. Some are actually really cool.
most people who are called rednecks are just poor white people & actually get that label from the yuppies & snobby whites like the guy on this forum who thinks he knows everything. The KKK is actually a non violent group now, & have not really attacked or. Hurt anyone in year.
I don't see the big deal. Miami & Orlando has a lot of New York City transplants & its a big reason why the culture there is what it is.They have something called Lthe new york state of mind" where rudeness is a norm. When florida sinks into the ocean Miami will be the first to go.
I used to live in a very small town in Arizona that is where I had the most problems now I live in Colorado which is fine racism wise but very far from any of my family and as far as the things i like to do (more of a big city girl less of a hiking biking girl) there is nothing to do here the closet mall is Denver 4 hours away -.-. I seem to have problems no matter where I go in Arizona they hated me for being black in Detroit the hated me for being white, here is decent but i still get people who hate me for being mexican which im not even, I suppose with a family as diverse as mine finding the ideal place for us will definitely be a treasure hunt.
ooooooh ok so you are a big city girl who is easily bored huh? Oh ok well I say Miami is your best choice. You would fit in perfectly in Miami, you may want to avoidJacksonville/Orlando all together.
I have to agree. Culturally, Miami is probably the most diverse in FL if not the entire US. However, you have tremendous heat that lasts a good part of the year down there, crime and traffic are bad and they are in a very hurricane prone spot as well.
There's always give and take isn't there? I hate decisions.

I felt the need to join this page after being a lurker for a while to reply to this. I'm half African and half Italian and moved to Jacksonville with my adopted African-American parents. I've also dealt with problems stemming from my race. Florida overall is pretty tolerant in terms of mixed races and interracial marriages (my husband is white) but to be honest the further south you go the more tolerant it is. Jacksonville like any large city will have it pockets of people who haven't mentally moved passed the 1950's but for the most part no one says anything to your face about it. We do randomly get stares and second glances but nothing outright that I've been able to detect. There are certain area's around metro Jacksonville that I avoid because I honestly don't feel like dealing with the one random racist that might open their mouth.
Southeast FL is one of the least racist areas of the U.S. I have lived in, racism is everywhere even in places like L.A. and NYC but what makes southeast florida unique is that for the most part people are VERY indifferent to what race you are, what youre doing and who youre with. Ive heard of reverse racism in SE FL though where whites feel racism because latins/blacks are the majority in the miami metropolitan area but you have to understand it's miami the sun is hot, the beaches are beautiful and tourists from all over the world visit 24/7 and people just dont care what you're doing unless you strip down naked and go running through the streets screaming something crazy and even then people would only notice that for a few seconds and go on with their day
However crime level, lack of good schools and lack of good, quality jobs in Florida is a completely different story

The heat is not that bad in central and northern parts of florida its the miami heat thats a scorcher
