Default Jacksonville is tolerant? Not if you are LGBT

On August 15th.,2012 The Jacksonville city council refused to extend it Human Rights Ordinance to include Gays, Bisexuals or Transgendered residents of Florida's largest city and failed to protect them from discrimination in employment, housing or even businesses that would discriminate against them.

In 1998 Miami Dade county residents had to go to the polls to include "sexual orientation" as part of it's Human Rights Ordinance and it passed. Other Florida cities & counties that have similar laws on their books include Broward, Palm Beach ,Orange counties ,Daytona Beach, Gainseville, & Lakeland amongst others.

Jax will never be considered a major city with discrimination like this against a certain section of it's residents. Keep living in the puritanical 1950's.

Sorry to hear that, but it doesn't exactly shock me. "The South" (which JAX is definitely a part) is not exactly known for leading the way in in human rights issues. Remember that Civil War thing?

The failure to pass this ordinance was very disappointing to a lot of Jacksonville residents. It also had bi-partisan support from numerous former Jacksonville mayors and leaders.

Human rights are NOT "intact in Jax" -- many residents voiced their experiences of discrimination from employment and housing to the council. It's completely ridiculous that the city council members would listen to the "bombardment of emails, letters, calls" on an issue that protects a minority.

This was an appalling failure of city leadership to lead and do the right thing.

Homosexuals make up approx. 4% of US population. They also choose to live this way, hence, homosexuality is deemed to be a lifestyle choice. A lifestyle choice does not make one a minority. Ask most any black person.

Yes, homosexuals are not a minority and not protected.

Nor should they be...
