I am driving along AIA towards Jax beach and everyone is coughing, coughing, coughing. I pull into Joe's Crab Shack and the diners are all coughing and the waitress tells me that it's the red tide (whatever that is). I am trying to make the connection when someone mentions algae in the air. Being from NY, I am wondering if anybody out there can explain this phenomenon, is it dangerous, and is it a seasonal thing here in Jax?

Why is the title "Rip Tide", but the thread about "Red Tide"? They are two totally different things.

Yeah ... I corrected myself. "Red Tide" was intended.

Since you're new to the area, and rip tide is mentioned... rip currents are more common here. They are swift-moving currents that can carry bathers away from shore. You can be caught in one very close to shore. If that happens, instead of trying to swim directly in to shore, swim parellel to the coast, swiming closer to the shore along the way.

Many swimmers get in trouble by trying to swim against them.

This happened to me once when I was a kid.
I followed those directions and got in okay. It was scary.

I walked our beach Thursday and did not get the scratchy throat, but am not sure if the red tide is actually gone.
You'd think it would be diluted by now!
