I think you'll find roaches more in apt settings, where there are dumpsters. Unless you're in a community where people leave trash out all the time.

Wow, thanks for all the information, everyone; I appreciate it. I really do feel more at ease about this now, and all the tips are useful so I know what action to take.

I suppose I have gotten used to spiders and crickets here myself so in the event I have to get used to something else, hopefully I can do it. But maybe I won't have to!

My husband and I will be planning a Florida "test" trip before long. We were in Orlando for my work this fall, and a lot of the chronic pain he normally experiences simply went away while we were down there. So that is prompting our move, plus he hates Virginia (I love it; it's my home state). We are not really interested in living in Orlando, however, so we started researching other Florida cities and started to be drawn to Jacksonville. I am looking forward to actually checking the city out in person.
