I am married to a Kiwi and we live here in Jax. He is a physio and we do considerably better living in the States vs Down Under. Cost of living (houses, food, clothes, etc.) is much cheaper in Jax than OZ or NZ. You can always find a job in the nursing field, but I agree with the others, you will do better if you finish your degree and have a Bachelors in Nursing. I have no idea about electrical jobs, but I agree with Shaken, the building industry seems to be doing well in our area. We live in Nocatee which is a community in Northern St John's County, 10 minutes from the beach, and it is CRAZY how fast it is growing. Houses are popping out of the ground everywhere! Healthcare is a mess in the States - you definitely need private insurance, but as a nurse, your employeer would provide you access to that. No worries about the cat, she can come with you when/if you decide to move. Would only pose an issue if you decided you did not like it here and wanted to moveback. For me and my husband, our decision was made based on the fact that we could live and work in the States and afford to go and visit NZ, whereas, if we lived and worked in NZ, we wouldnot be able to afford regular visits to the States. We have four young children and think Jacksonville is a very nice place to be raising them. Our beaches are wonderful and several Kiwis that have been to visit us say that Jacksonville reminds them a lot of Brisbane. Good luck with your decision - I know it is a big one!

Nursing is a good career in Florida- you might be OK here.
A couple of minor corrections, from a Registered Nurse. The nursing degree is a BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing). There is no BA (Bachelor of Arts). I had a BA in another field before I got my nursing degree.

My sister is an RN in the Jacksonville area. Hiring is sporadic, and the salaries compared to much of the rest of the country are paltry - one huge reason I haven't moved back to Florida. I make more with my straight salary where I am than my sister does with scads of overtime.

I somehow only just saw this message! I know exactly what you mean about being able to visit NZ whilst living there, VS the incredible struggle it would be the other way around. I'm still leaning towards Jax, but I'm concerned that if my husband doesn't choose a career soon, that we will rely on my working as a nurse so much that it will be difficult to start a family. :/
