I actually grew up in Cleveland near the beach. If you asked me which is dirtier between the Atlantic Ocean near Jax and Lake Erie near Cleveland, I would need a minute to think about it.

Compared to the rest of the country, Jacksonville's cost of living is extremely affordable. JEA is a rip off and yes your auto insurance might be a little higher but everything else is a lot cheaper than any other major cities. The area around the St. Johns Town Center seems to be the most popular lately as it seems like the entire city is flocking to it, but the traffic can be a bit much sometimes. I would suggest going on Craigslist and looking for a Condo for rent in a gated community. Those are your best value for the money since the apartments for lease in 32256 can cost you several hundreds more than a rented condo.

Actually the Riverside & Avondale historic district is pretty much the "it" residential neighborhood right now. Has been for the last 2 years.

While the SJTC itself is very popular, it's a mall. And the "area around" it doesn't have unusually demand. It's on par with other similar residential in the city.
