As I look more and more into moving to the Saint Augustine area, the more I see recommendations (for safe and family friendly areas) for subdivisions and "planned communities". Is this pretty true to the area? I will be renting an apartment, and will be visiting the area in a couple of weeks, but am trying to get a feel for the area beforehand.

Is the area subdivisions, and the rest unsafe areas?

Thanks!

Ok, thanks for being so helpful. So is that to say north, south, and east St. Aug are "desirable" areas? Is there an area of town where young families tend to live? I'm not used to subdivisions and complexes, and don't want a "cookie cutter" feel in order to live in a safe area if possible.

I can add no more to what I have said. As a realtor I am not allowed to steer you away from areas

I'll finish what Peter can't. The low priced spread part of the City of St. Augustine tends to be black and low income. How safe? I don't know. It definitely wouldn't be on my radar screen in terms of places to reside (I'm high income - not low income). But if you are black and low income - you might feel at home in that part of town.

The higher priced spread part of the City of St. Augustine is probably out of your price range. Robyn

Understandable, Peter.

I mean, regardless of my income level and race, I obviously don't want to live in the ghetto, and I don't think that would be an area where young families tend to live.

Is it just the western parts of the city that tend to be bad areas, or is it all over? I'm just asking if living in a subdivision is your only option if you want to live in a nice, safe area?

You do not have to be in a sub division to be safe. Most areas in St Aug are safe some safer than others ., I hope I have made my point

I'm not sure the OP said what their price range was. Hard to say if they can/cannot afford a certain area since it wasnt mentioned.

Get_Glowing: If you will live in an apartment, call this one. It's in a very nice complex in a safe area, the rents are in your desired price range and I believe that they do sliding scale based on income. Here is a link Overview | Ponce Harbor | Affordable Apartments Your biggest hurdle will be finding a job in St Augustine. The apartments usually will not accept an application unless the tenant has a job locally or can prove receiving ongoing income such as social security. Most employers here only hire locally for their lower paying positions.

IIRC - the OP has started several other similar threads. And my recollection is the budget is $700/month or so for a 1 bedroom apartment. If I'm wrong - the OP can correct me. Robyn
