I have a son who is a special needs child and we are looking at moving to Jax. We are currently in California, who has excellent schools for children with special needs, although I am getting out of the military and home prices and rent here are not very affordable. We have been looking into some of the schools there but no info on the schools websites mention anything about children with special needs. I am looking for information on elementary schools in particular, although it won't be long before my children will be moving on. Any information that can be given would be greatly appreciated.

Please clarify the special needs if you can. Learning disability, physical disability, behavioral? That makes a big difference in what types of programs are good where.

Thanks.

I work in the ASD (autistic spectrum disorder) program at an elementary school here in Jax....I'd like to help, but I need to know what your child's exceptionality is...then I could point you in the right direction.

This is the website for the school district:
duval county public schools - about dcps - overview (broken link)

Like I said, it would help to know the exceptionality, as not all schools have ESE classes and some have certain exceptionality classes..

If it's autism or any other autism spectrum disorder, I can give you advice about Clay County's programs.

We haven't heard back from the OP on this thread, but I just added a link to the thread I mentioned above, and I'll add here too for the OP, or you Jon, or anyone else reading:

There is a Center for Autism in Jacksonville that is an adjunct of the University of Florida. It is located in the neighborhood of Lakewood, between San Marco and San Jose (Southside of the city):

Center for Autism & Related Disabilities | University of Florida College Of Medicine - Jacksonville (http://www.hscj.ufl.edu/peds/aut/ - broken link)

Riveree, that is the #1 starting point for anyone who is in or moving to the Jax area and has kids with an autism spectrum disorder. They have been a world of help to me!

Great to hear Jon! I'll hold on to the link in case the question comes up again.....I'm so glad to hear there is a good resource out there - it is so needed.
