I will be leaving my job of 7+ yrs and relocating to Jacksonville to be closer to family in the very near future. I figure I'm 29 with no kids and job I don't like, now is a good time as any to start over. I've visited Jacksonville on my last two vacations and tried to soak up as much as information as possible to solidify my choice. I've came up with a lot more positives than negatives. My negatives are heat, snakes and finding work lol. So my question is, how is the jobs situation there? And if you could tell me a little more about Jville that I wouldn't know in two weeks of vacation would be cool too. Good or bad. Thanks!

Depends on what you do and what your degree is in, if you have one.

No degree, going back to school. I'm in sales now, getting out of it, I'm done.

Well - if you're going to back to school - have you picked a school you'd like to attend here? Robyn

Yes, I'm looking at Florida State College at Jacksonville.

Well - you won't qualify for in-state tuition until you're been here for a while (assuming you apply and are admitted):

State University System of Florida | Board of Governors : For Students

So perhaps you ought to line up some kind of job that will get you by until you get back to school. Or at least come here with sufficient savings (family help - whatever) to live on. Although you don't like what you're doing now - you do have experience in that area - and perhaps you can get a decent job in that line of work here.

What kind of sales are you in?

FWIW - almost every student we run across here is not only going to school - but working many hours a week as well. Don't know how they do it - but they all seem to work hard as heck. Robyn

Well that's just great! 12 months? Wow. I absolutely was planning on finding work regardless, I do have savings to last me a little bit but I still would need and want to find something. Anything would suffice. I currently work for Frito-Lay.

I know some retired people who have worked for various food companies (both in the greater JAX area and elsewhere). And - if you've ever been downtown - you can "smell the coffee" (Maxwell House).

FWIW - Frito Lay has a presence in the JAX metro area. No current job openings best I can tell looking at its website. But - as a current employee - you might be able to go to the head of the line in terms of job openings. Robyn

Tuition at FSCJ isn't too insanely high for out-of-state, but it's way more than in-state. If you really want to get started you could just take one class each semester while you work and transition to a FL residency. Where are you moving from?
