How southern Jacksonville is perceived to be depends a lot on the part of town. More so on the Westside, somewhat less on Southside and the Beaches still less in neighborhoods like Riverside and San Marco that are relatively close to downtown. Overall, there's a fairly southern flavor.

Why would your friend wear a shirt that says anything-hater?

He's marking himself as a target without even knowing who his "enemy" is......not very smart. If I see him around town wearing that shirt, he's not going to like running into me.

He's a good ol FL boy born and raised, and a very nice guy. He doesnt really "hate" them, it's just a tee shirt. He would still be my friend if I was the same person but from Pennsylvania or wherever.

As far as where he wears it or who might not like his tee-shirt, like I said, he hasnt had any problems that I know of... but I told him in Orlando, not to wear it, lol.

Jacksonville does have a church on most every block. Unfortunatly, like in all citys, church attendance is down. All people flavors are welcome at the church I attend.

well, we never say "thats *****" we say "thats weird"...our lovely pine trees, our hot afternoons when we all pile in to the car barefoot and drive home sandy, playing in the rain in summer, and like someone said, all the churches on Church St. downtown, our old cobblestone streets downtown...these are some of the things that seem so Southern to me... I even sometimes think the homeless people seem like a touch of the south, you might see a few nodding off on bus stop benches...its a slower pace in some spots...and boy look out on JTB at 5pm...go to the Suwanne Bluegrass Festival and youll see the other side of what "southern" means...in all, its very lovely...

JAX isn't that bad. I grew up in Jersey and went through some culture shock when I moved down here after I left the service, and there might be some places where your family might feel uncomfortable. The good people around here tend to be much nicer and there are going to be bad people everywhere.

You probably won't miss the cold winters, but man I know that I sure miss the food from up North.

Jacksonville is very large and that is why The crime rate is high, Yes we are southren I grew up North of Jacksonville in a Small town called Callahan and north of Callahan was Georgia. Callahan was the typical small town, everybody knows you more than you know yourself but a Great place to rasie Kids, I moved to Jax at 19 yrs old and enjoy the convience. I feel people are more excepting of "mixed families" than in the past, My husband is from Brazil and a lot darker than me but I never have people say hateful things to us. I would suggest living at the beach, Baymeadows, Ortega, Mandarin, intercoastal, Hodges Blvd is a good area with good childcare and schools. I live in Baymeadows and it is nice if you just stay on the 9a side. People here are just not as fast paced as the northern world! People are generally friendly, Jacksonville is becoming quite diverse but there are always areas outside of jax that are more quiet..fruit cove, callahan, green cove, Amelia island. etc... go to jacksonville.com to learn more

You know you're in the south when the restaurant offers "sweet or unsweet" instead of "red or white."

And if that needs explanation, then you ain't from around here.

Oh, and Jax is definitely a "sweet/unsweet" town.

Yeah! That is unique!

The first time (okay, the only time! ) I had one of my SILs to lunch at my home, she was appalled that I did not offer iced tea with lunch! I didn't know it was the "rule"!
