In any case, I have no idea why you have any desire to come here, but I will switch places with you. I've been dying to go (back) to England and visit Europe as well.

Richyraper, not to burst your bubble but I am also going through the immigration process, and believe me, living the dream won't be an overnight process.Florida is one of the largest states with Immigrants that are not accounted for, so to speak and they are taking measures to take care of that.

I would advise that you look into the immigration issues first before making a move.It may be simpler where you are from but you won't even renew/transfer your Driver's license in Jax if you do not have a passport, or Alien card.

Once you get that sorted, the work permits, etc, you should at least be alright, unless ofcourse you have millions to live on, then work is not a biggie.

Otherwise, Cheers! and all the best.:-)

Default Immigration Info website

Rich and Jess, this is one of the most accurate websites to get info. Granted ;laws are changing all the time, but at least if you study it here thoroughly, you may not require a lawyer to interpret it.....Nothing against lawyers, just cutting the Chin-wag.

no bud its ok no bursting goin on here just advice... stuff to be aware of to be honest id sooner people say the downsides as well as then we can get a realistic view of how to do stuff....
im hoping i will be accounted for and not just lost in the immigration system the uk seems to be the worst for illegal aliens so i hope i dont end up like that...
still yet to here back from a company to sponsor me im trying through my company at the moment but i understand it may take a while for all the head bosses and stuff to say yay or nay to my application then i gotta worry about getting over so i understand it will take a long time but it doesnt put me off me and jess are both really pushing hard to make it all come true because its what we both want!

Nothing against lawyers, just cutting the Chin-wag..... and the extorsionately high rates they seem to like charging for sending a couple of letters and then telling you that they sent a couple of letters!

Talking Rich and Jess

I think *(1)y'all would be a smashing addition to Jacksonvilles booming population. Myself, I'm a Florida *(2)"Cracker" and really don't remember anything else but Jacksonville in growing up. I have lived all over the America's and my wife is a Naturalized US Citizen, born in Bogota, Colombia.
My transportation work has had me in both countries quite often. Though her family came to the USA in the early 1960's and the laws were different...she was able to get through the process alone. Today, most of her family live in the States, and we have sponsored a bunch of them, not all professionals, but heavy in university degrees etc... Still sometimes it just gets so mucked up you want to pull out your hair. I'll say, Colombia has been the complete reverse, of our local news stories. ANYTHING they can do to welcome and make someone feel at home is done. Now I'm a man with two countries as home.

I've got relations in almost every step of the process that you two are now considering. Anger! Rage! Reward! and a few new words that you won't want to tell the parson... Is it worth it? Oh yes... Is Jacksonville the best place to live? Like I said, I was a hippie that wandered and lived from Florida to California to Washington State... toss in Oklahoma, Missouri, Maryland and a few others and as the old song goes, "I've been everywhere..." In the Eastern USA, I don't think there is a city with more potential then Jacksonville. Certainly in my opinion, none with a more stunning downtown at night! In the America's my heart is torn between Medellin and Jacksonville, but being from a long line of rabid *(3)Southrons, my soul belongs to *(4)Dixie.

Before someone jumps on here, thinking I'm some crazy member of the Ku Klux Klan, YOU GOT THE WRONG GUY! (I married a Spanish lady) So historian would be much closer. My family was always on the liberal end of the South, clashing with those that hate since 1830...Yet they rode with Quantrail, Anderson, James, Starr and the Youngers in *(5)"The War of Yankee Aggression". Go figure! Weird. There are still some of the narrow minded old types around, but I think you'll find the city very accepting of new people. Just NEVER call anyone in Jacksonville a "YANK" or "YANKEE" unless you are SURE they come from the North. More pubs have been busted up over that error in judgement then any other, between Maryland and Miami!

Let me know if I can help you in any way... Bienvenida a Jacksonville a mis amigos

OCKLAWAHA

*[1]pure Southern word for You-All
*[2]Florida-Georgia term for one that has been in an area since "forever" but wasn't born there.
*[3]Old South spelling of Southerner
*[4]The historic Confederate States
*[5]War of Yankee Agression, also called: War Between the States, or Civil War, widely accepted terms though not really accurate. Generally mention of "THE WAR" in these parts refers to this conflict, or the current scrap in Iraq.

thats cool got a really positive side to lol got seriously confused with your numbers untill i read the bottom of your post... thanks for the *(1) 'Heads Up' about the yank and yankee bit i could see me gettin my face broken for calling someone that unintensionally meaning to cause offence... its a generic term in the UK for americans... what does it actually relate to?
correct me if im wrong but i think i know redneck:- generic term for a person who derived from the farming comunities (no offence intended by that by the way)

when we first thought of the whole US thing we looked all along the east coast and to be honest JAX was the ONLY place that really 'looked like home' younno a place that you feel you could fit into and not be on edge all the time or feel as if you were a foreigner.

*(1) Heads Up:- a UK street term for a friendly warning (when some one shouts a warning your head instinctively goes up and looks around for the danger.)

Talking Rick and Jess

Ahhh yes, the good old Yank and Redneck words... Here's my breakdown (for your survival) anyone else have a different take on this? Please let's hear it.

REDNECK ON A RAT HUNT

REDNECK: Real Rednecks, were poor Southrons that got completely burned out in THE WAR. Most had to turn to survival farming in sorry clay lands of Georgia, Alabama and parts of Florida. They worked the fields Sunrise to Sunset and often got horribly burned by the Sun as they were hunched over in those fields. Not all came from poverty either, good ol USA, was looking out for number one, and anyone that "fought for or supported those in rebellion" paid dearly for losing the war and having their property seized. These people and their children's, children, are the "Salt of the Earth" type folks.

Your new Volvo breaks down in some pine wood and good ol Bubba comes out with brother Ernest and they take you into town in the back of a 1967 pick-up truck.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
REDNECK: #2, A slang term for "Poor White Trash", that would steal your dog and hock your hubcaps. Toothless wonders that really shouldn't be taking up perfectly good air. They are here by choice, drugs, or more good old State Welfare programs, which after creating a culture of poor, suddenly got it's funding yanked out.

Some reform themselves. Some go back to REAL redneck roots, and others just fade away in jails, homeless shelters or old caravans (trailers) in the wood. Sadly it doesn't take too many to mess up the feelings folks have toward the REAL REDNECKS.

Redneck Sporting Events
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Redneck Security Patrol

REDNECK: #3, A term from the 1960's-70's, for the violent bike gang types that often beat up or even killed the "Peace and Flower Children" for no reason other then madness.

These guys and gals were refered to as Rednecks at the time, a term that slowly became "Bikers" which is now, through the cycle community, working hard to regain respect. Few of this old school crazy types are still out there, and even if they are, they certainly don't really qualify as true Rednecks.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

"Hey Y'all, watch this..."

New Redneck

Spotting features are not universal, but... lives in the Country, loves to hunt, likes Country Western Music, wears cowboy boots to church, too poor for dental work, friendly, will tell you their life story (OMG? is that ME?) Known to party hard, play hard, and work VERY hard. When a true Southron
Redneck, yells out..."Hey Y'all, watch this!" Get the hell out of his way, because it's probably the last thing he'll ever say!

Redneck beauty

================================================== ======

The Yank or Yankee:
Really a term used with pride in New England States, (the Northeast above New York). They even have a magazine called "Yankee". They were mostly old World UK-German craftsmen and women, and take great pride in their ornate homes, and refined lifestyles.

In the South, it is looked at as a downright nasty word. EVIL incarnate. You'd do better in the UK at a late hour insulting the Queen in a rough pub, then to call a Southron a Yankee. They are generally seen as...

Invaders
Children of Pyromaniacs
Braggarts
flaunting wealth
more interested in a $$ then your life
course in speech
pushy
rude

This is NOT to insult anyone here, simply to say what the average man on the street in Jacksonville thinks of the word Yankee. There are many fine folks from both sides of the old battle lines... Having ancestors that include Wallace and Bruce from Scotland, and you being from England, you sort of get a feel for the jabs. Usually friendly sparing that can get ugly.

Much of the hate, if not for the USA's attack on Southern civilians in the War, stems from the Post War period. Droves of former Yankee Soldiers came South. Many carried a popular suitcase made of carpet. They were called "Carpet-Baggers" (a term you might still hear on occasion) as they would enter a town under military rule, bend the rules, drop a few coins and buy up homes, farms and industry for their own gain. Turning the survivors into Rednecks.

Not to fear SOUTHRONS! When those re-enforcements arrive We'll take Washington DC, and show em some good old Redneck living!

Hope this gives Y'all a clear "Heads-Up" (we also use that one) of the background of the terms.

ROFL!! The guys pitching toilet seats are my neighbors. I know the rat hunt guy, too.

Those people are one of the main reasons that I want to leave East Tennessee. Some people think that is just a stereotype, but I'm here to tell you, the area I live in now is nothing but the above redneck #1 and redneck #2. The problem is, redneck #1 is always working so you only come into contact with redneck #2.

None of this is offensive, redneck#2's live-in girlfriend is offensive. She's 50lbs overweight, wears low-rise jeans (or sweatpants) and a shirt that is two sizes too small and apparently has no mirrors in her house because she honestly believes she looks good. ;-)
