Teaching employment Need special educator or experienced paraprofessional to teach 1 to 1
I am a parent of a 13 yr old girl in the autism spectrum. We are interested in finding a special educator or experienced paraprofessional to work with our daughter at her school (private). This may be a full time position. It is also a possibility that may be the instructor of 2 students (2 girls about the same age). This could be a good position for a retired experienced teacher, or someone that would like to leave overcrowded, undersupported school environment. It is important that the teacher is familiar with direct instruction reading curriculum, is organized and structured.

I have two kids in the spectrum who are going through the Clay County school system with great results. If private school (or a private tutor) is your preference, I would check with the Center for Autism and Related Disabilities and see if they could help.

I work in the field and there are so many wonderful teachers and Paraprofessionals also working in Duval County schools. I happen to work with 1st and 2nd graders in the ASD, so I know from experience.
I agree, that UF, Mae Barker would be of help. Although I don't know why you opted to enroll your child in the private sector...which of course, is your choice.

I have a problem that I am hoping some teachers in Jacksonville can help me with. This is really about my husband. He is 54 and just graduated from unf in august of 2007. He graduated with a bachelors degree in special education, He worked full time at alden rd exceptional school in Jax for about 7 years as a paraprofessional there and loved it. The kids really loved him there. I attended the plays they had there and you could see how much the students liked him. The problem is that he has done all that is required to fulfill the requirements to be a special education teacher and to be hired. He performed his internship at mandarin middle school and completed that with flying colors. He passed the teachers's certification test. He has applied online constantly throught the whole year to recent applications and with resumes handed to different schools in Duval county, Clay county and St. John's county to no avail. He has only had 1 call from Clay county for a teaching position. Is it age or what is the problem with them not hiring him???? He has been working as a substiture in duval county. He has a good personality with the kids. I have had some of his coworkers at alden rd tell me this. But the principal at alden rd doesn't seem interested in hiring him, either. He showed me his evaluations from alden rd school as a paraprofessional and they were very good. Can anyone help us with this matter? I told him to go to Duval teachers union but they won't respond back to any of his calls or emails??? The vice president ruby won't reply back to him. I worked for bellsouth for 33 years and I could always count on my union. I guess it depends on who you know. I didn't tell my husband i am writing this. He is bad about not fighting back and is really kind of a shy guy. I told him you have to fight for your rights. We have both lived in Jacksonville for several years. I love it here but it has become too overdeveloped....thanks for any replies back....I am desperate for him. I took early retirement from my company because of the impossible quotas and stress we had to deal with at 33 years...yeah!! i know that it a lot of years....Jacksonville is a very nice area but we also want to move to mountains of nc...thanks again....Pam

Applying so late in the school year is more than likely the problem. I would venture to say, that as the school year ends, there will be openings; especially in Duval county. People will retire and/or transfer and there's always openings to be filled. It's often difficult to find teachers to fill the ESE slots...so don't let him give up. It's just that we're more than 1/2 through the school year, and I doubt anyone's hiring at this point.
You said, he's been working as a sub (Kelly services) while waiting, right? That's a great way to not only getting to know the teachers and paras in other schools, but the principal as well.
As for the DTU...I really don't see how they could help...unless he's still a member and was treated unfairly. Although I think it's unacceptable that Ruby George hasn't bothered to respond, even to say she can't help.
Don't let him give up...and hopefully, he's also be subbing over on the west side....there's many schools over there with ASD classes.

I hate to say it and it would be hard to prove it but him being 54 is being held against him. He could be the greatest guy in the world but that is almost retirement age.
I think it is unfair, if you had said 44, but they may be looking at him and asking how long is he going to work for?
If they have candidates who are 35 and also just got their teaching degree recently they will most likely go with them.
Does he look 54? Is his hair gray? Can he make himself look somewhat younger?
