I am also moving to town soon, and would like cable. I have COX cable here in Rhode Island, but I am not a huge fan of their customer service.

Comcast is the big cable co here
there is also Dish network and Direct TV
Just keep in mind that storms and bad weather can affect your reception for the dishes
Depending on your location there is also Bell South DSL

How did you arrive at the speed difference? Just a gut feeling or do you have benchmarks that you can share?

There are several speed tests that you can do from your PC. Just google internet speed test. I have had cable and DSL in several different situations. From my experience, cable has alwasy been at least twice as fast. But, it also depends on the age/quality of your lines and where you live.

Cable internet is much faster than DSL. David's right: try the online speed tests. My mom has DSL, I have cable, and it's not that close.

Ofcourse ... you can check your download and upload speeds at speakeasy.net or many other sites but that speed test is only for your own computer. The other thing is that DSL can run on different widths and be totally different from one user to another. But the question is has anyone here done a speed test with cable? Where you live may be a factor but not a huge one.

Currently both Comcast (42.95 with tv service)and ATT (42.95) in JAX have the 6Mbps download speed plans so in that sense it's equal (upload, Comcast is slightly faster). But Comcast have a higher tier at 8Mbps for $52.95 with tv service) . In contrast to Comcast ads, they're not THAT much faster than ATT's DSL service, they're just using the old saying that DSL is slow when you're far from the CO. But Bellsouth(ATT) has a big presence in JAX, their DSL service is well covered.

Comcast charge extra fees for internet if you don't use their TV service. ATT you can order with out phone service. So if you go with satellite tv but want comcast internet, you'll pay more for the internet.

As for which tv service's best here, that depends on your own TV viewing habit and programming needs.

I know most people go with comcast for sake of convenience of having all service with one company.
